Happy birthday to
I know we both agree the goat dad deserves more love, so I figure maybe a good birthday present is finally getting to sit down with him for that promised cup of tea, eh? C:

You are right. Asgore needs more love.

The game makes it clear that monsters power and vitality comes from their emotional state.  In short, monsters can (and did) DIE from despair. Asgore giving them hope was
the only way to prevent his people's extinction.

Toriel's 'solution'  (leaving with one soul and picking and choosing targets) would have just led to another war with the humans (as Asriel points out). More to the point, Humans A. don't tend to react well to monsters killing their kind (no matter WHO they are). B. Wouldn't react well to a goat man, wielding a pitchfork, with fire powers, coming from underneath the earth to collect souls (sound familiar?).

The descriptions of the items suggest that most of the users were probably older. In fact, the *only* evidence of *any* children being among the six was the user of the toy knife. Given the location where their related items were found and hints from the game, the circumstances are unclear. Furthermore, there is alot to suggest that several of the fallen humans were absolute murderous pieces of garbage (the descriptions and lore on several pieces of equipment seem to suggest that the Gunslinger and the Ballerina were on a genocide run and had to be put down).

Also, put yourself in the timeframe: the humans just killed a member of the royal family (hell, they might've even believed the humans killed BOTH Chara and Asriel) in cold blood and have threatened to kill more (per Gerson) if they saw another monster near their village. What would've happened if Asgore would've let it slide? The game already points to the answer in one of the neutral endings: Toriel is dethroned by an angry, vengeful populace and sent into exile, while her people prepare for war with renewed bloodlust under the grip of a leader far more vicious than she. Same thing would've happened to Asgore. Damned if he do. Damned if he dont.

Also, he's not trying to kill you anymore than Toriel is. He knows there is no way out for you unless you take his soul. So he decides to sacrifice himself for you. During the fight it's clear he's holding back, not attacking you all out (despite being precise enough to hit the mercy button, he avoids looking at you and seems to be swinging wildly to try and avoid hitting you. Also with his stats, his damage should be able to drop you in one shot). Also, if Flowey is gone, he will commit suicide at the end of your fight if you try to spare him, just so YOU can be free. He is trying to get you to kill him so that his people will still have hope AND you will be saved. Even at the expense of his own life.

On top of that, Asgore KNOWS about the Resets. He knows about the existence of the player as an outside alien horror that treats killing monsters/sparing them like a game. Something that only he, Sans, Frisk, and Flowey know. He knows that in the end only this outside force can save them/damn them. That would definitely be something that changes ones perspective. A perspective Toriel was not privy to.

The point is, the big guy was stuck in a no win scenario and no one in the Underground had any answers (not even Toriel, as the neutral endings show, who was supposed to be the tactical genius behind the throne). Far from 'spineless' or a 'coward', Asgore may be the perfect example of a Byronic Hero: a champion in a damned world, flawed by his sins, but noble in his brokenness, a man who does not delude himself by calling himself a hero and accepting of others contempt, trying desperately to save others even though he expects it will cost him everything he holds dear (up to and including his soul).

I can do something better than that. I can link you to a journal by one far more articulate  than I (that also contains this same statement from me and others):

Very nice! Asgore is underloved, i guess thats suiting for a main antagonist, you dont have as much time to get atttached. Your artwork of him looks great tho, i think my favorite thing is how big the padding in his hand is implied to be from the way his fingers are loosely curled around that tea cup.

After having played the game, it feels so weird to think of Asgore as the main antagonist but it really was built up that way. He definitely deserves more appreciation as a character, even if just for the fact that he's interesting and sympathetic.

Thanks! He should consider having some custom tea cups made to accommodate those big mitts, haha.

This isn't the fact that accepts "no" as an answer. I mean, who would have the heart to say no? lol

Nice work on the highlights on the hair by the way, the shining effect on armour ain't too bad either.

Asgore is an interesting character who seems to either get completely dismissed due to the child murder, or else completely excused because he has a soft side.  Neither of which is really fair to his character concept.  It's cool to see him in your style!  The goofy balloon and cup of tea seem so him  XD .  I really like the print/texture going on in the cape.

I agree, and it's probably because compared to the rest of the main characters, we spend so little time getting to know Asgore. It would've been great to have a "date" with him like you do with the others. One of the best things about UT as far as I'm concerned, is that all of the characters have flaws and are actually quite multi-faceted, Fluffybuns included... though I can see why it's hard to get past the whole child murdering thing. He made a bad choice in anger and got stuck between a rock and a hard place. Despite what he's done he's not inherently a bad person-- which is really hard to pull off from a storytelling perspective, so major kudos to Toby there.

And thanks again for all the nice comments that I'm shamefully only just now getting around to replying to!

Yeah, being the big boss at the end of the game, it's pretty typical we hear about him more than see him.  Your reply got me thinking, though.  Asgore gets a lot of the blame for what happened to the other children, which granted he did put a bad policy in motion and probably killed some of them personally, but at least some of the other monsters are complicit to varying degrees.  They either actively take part in hunting humans or stand by and let it happen.  Papyrus is about the only one I'd give a pass to, because I'm not entirely certain he knew at first that capturing a human would result in their death.  He does seem to realize it later, because he tries to convince Undyne she didn't need to destroy Frisk and he does describe her opinion as 'murdery' later.  But even he doesn't go as far as physically defending Frisk or accompanying them along the way.  Heck, not even Toriel does that.  The True Pacifist ending does address this, but there's still six dead kids who didn't get that same consideration.

I agree, I love that they're so complex!  If Toby ever decides to give out more information on Gaster, I expect he'll be the same, with good and bad qualities.

And you're welcome
