Description

Let me tell you about the time I misjudged a Fire Emblem costume… ok this is actually the 3rd time. I didn’t think Lon’qu’s costume was going to be as difficult or time-consuming to make as Rafiel’s. Sadly, it was, just in a different way.

The base fabric is faux suedes with black bridal satin trim, lined with comfy cotton (bit of a mistake since lint sticks to it so easily but I already had a ton of it so it was “free”). The gold detailing was created using Jacquard Fabric Paint. Gloves, belts, and armor bits were made from the swathes of leftover vinyl that I have. Leather would have looked amazing, but I cannot buy it when I have so much vinyl. Sometimes you have to behave yourself. Only sometimes.

The fur trim was absurdly messy as it always is. It adds to the collection of things that refuse to be cleaned and vacuumed up (which includes glitter and sequins from my Elsa dress). Also, I did not have time to make a super legit scabbard so this one is kind of ghetto. I made it with posterboard and reinforced it with paper maché and covered it in matching vinyl). The “belt bling”, as I like to call it, was made with the lid to a salsa jar and craft foam.

I did post this on FB and Tumblr but didn't really show the finished sword or wig soooo here they are as well. This badboy is Katsu-ready. I'm excited!

What kind of pattern did you use to make this?  Or did you make it yourself?

I'd love to have a pattern of my own.

I drafted this pattern myself. That said, you should be able to modify a Jedi or karate gi top pattern for the same effect. Both styles are easily purchased at fabric stores from major companies such as Simplicity, McCall, or Butterick - or - if you already own a karate gi or even a wrap-around bathrobe, you can make your own pattern based off of that too.

So I am just starting to make cosplays and I had a quick question. For the base part, you just took a whole fabric and cut it like that ( short in the front and long in the back) and then you painted it over with the fabric paint? Just wanted to get confirmation

Hi there, perhaps I was not as concise in my description as I should have been. The dark blue is 1 type of fabric. The black trim around the collar is another fabric as is the light blue pieces. The only part that was painted is the gold circle detailing on the black trim.

However, you are correct. I made the pattern and trimmed the front panels short, the back was left long.

Oh man ;o; I really need to step up my game if I'm gonna make a Lon'qu costume happen, or at least make sure I don't mess it up...

How did you make the main part of his cape shirt thing? Y'know, the thing with the gold circles on the front of them? I saw some people kinda split it down the middle and hid that it was two seperate pieces, but i'm trying to see if I can create a full cape/dress thing instead of making a gap between the stomach wrap.

I made the top like a kimono with the obi worn over it - it is really simple to make the costume this way and I am not sure why other people would choose to make it 2 separate pieces [like a shirt and a skirt worn over the pants]. The costume itself is pretty minimal in terms of the number of pieces involved: top w/armor attached, pants, obi, gloves, boots, wig, sword + scabbard.

The "belt bling" was hilarious in your description. xD I'm going to be making an Owain costume for my boyfriend, and I'll definitely be looking at your costume for help! The salsa lid thing is genius! Haha.

LOL thanks for commenting.

For me, FE costumes always look so simple... until I start working on them, then I get so fixated on details, and then they become just as rage-inducing as any other project. Hoping you have a much easier time making that Owain costume - good luck! The world needs more FE cosplay.
