Both Thomas and Friends and MLP have never stayed the same for a long period of time.Thomas and Friends is split into four sections: The Classic Series, The New Series, The Nitrogen Series, and the Arc Series. Each series has had a specific look to it and helps it stand out against the rest. The only difference is that it's all part of one LONG storyline.
MLP has had four "Generations" since it's creation. First came My Little Pony, then My Little Pony Tales, then My Little Pony (Gen 3), and My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. Like Thomas, each one has a specific look to it that makes it stand out from the rest.
Also, for both shows, fans are shown to be really happy with the fourth "Version" of each show.

Also makes sense how each one is like an equivalent of one another, with Seasons 13-16 being horribly intolerable like MLP's G3, and Seasons 17-present being a drastic improvement like FiM.
