Description
From the Battletech card game, Wizards of the Coast, 1997.One of two paintings I did of the Cicada, neither of them turned out that great, but at least the colors on this one are less embarassing.

Back when I made these, I did them up first as shaded drawings with pencil and paper. Then I scanned them and colored them in Photoshop. These days I draw in Photoshop as well, mostly because it's easier to deal with minor mistakes - A head that's too big or too small can be resized instead of needing to erase it and start again.

I play MWO, and Cicadas (in the hands of an even halfway capable pilot, of which there are thankfully few) are a serious pain.

Still blows my skills away. This is still the type of skill level I am trying to achieve. I loved the artwork of the Cicada 'Mech cards you had done back in the day, even if they were crappy units.

Well, it's mostly the color-scheme and lighting I'm not keen on. Brown isn't exactly thrilling

So that's why these days video games aren't very exciting to look at...

Ha! I've actually seen a few articles online complaining about that. Mind you, I've recently been playing "Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning", and all the bright primary colors kind of hurt me...

You need a sort of happy balance. Red Alert 3 was pretty loud, too, when I played its Beta. I'd point out Doom (yeah, it's nearly 20 years old now) which had a good balance of desaturation and bright colors so you could see everything clearly.

Yeah, Doom really did brilliant work with its palette, especially considering it was a 256 color game!
