"What? you think I'm gonna crash into a planet? you got no faith in me! I've flown a plane before!" She takes the welding mask, re adjusts her laser torch, and kneels down again and starts welding, leaning in close and using both hands to keep the laser steady

Morta powered up the magnets, and steered them around the join, for the most part letting Alex take the lead, impressed with how much confidence and skill she had gained with the laser torch in just a couple of hours. Morta's environment suit was finely thermoregulated, but still, she was sweating, worried she had hurt her friend's feelings - she wanted to say something, but didn't want to distract Alex while she was welding. When the last atomic bonds of the join were zipped into place, and Alex powered down her torch, Morta handed her a water-bottle and said, "Look, Alex, there isn't anyone in this world I'd trust more than you with this ship - but spaceship piloting is really, really difficult! I had to put in hundreds of hours of sim-time, and get brain implants loaded with skillwares, before I took the controls of a ship for real - an' even then, I wasn't ready, but it was an emergency, so I had to."

Alex looked annoyed and angry, but then smirked and punched Morta playfully "I'm just kiddin' Morta, I wouldn't know what I was doin'... I wouldn't let a kid from the renaissance drive my mom's truck either!"

Morta breathed a huge sigh of relief and gave Alex an amused-but-annoyed look. "Argh! You butt!" She punched Alex back, laughing, still playfully, but maybe just a little harder.

But history is awesome! It might be some crazy teaching method that makes it harder than it should be (that happened to me and several others during 8th and 9th grade)

And the other grades don't seem that bad after all

It is the teacher and the way it's thought... I think next year when she gets a new teacher, and with her interest in her grandparents stories, she'll excel... but memorizing a bunch of dates of stuff is not her strong suit
