In her case, she will indeed be repeating it--in Summer school.

Morta: Ehh, don't worry about it. The past was infra-dumb anyway. Plus it's super depressing. Everyone got old and sick and died back then.

Alex: Infra dumb... you're just sayin' we're all stupid and we're all week and sick? cause... shut up! *glares at morta* And I ain't that stupid! and at least we ain't the middle ages! Just cause you're from centuries in the future don't mean you can laugh at how much of a failure we are! there are smart, carin' and hard workin' folks tryin' to make the world a better place, and you growing up lucky with great computerized education and robots to do your every whim and no hours of farm work you gotta do each day to support your family, lumping us all as primitive, unhealthy morons just makes you a jerk, not better than me and the 7 billion other folks in my time!
(Alex can get worked up and angry at times if she feels someone is saying or doing something morally wrong)

Morta: *blushing crimson* I- I- I didn't- I mean - I- I- was thinking more of mediaeval - and politicians and stuff - I mean- AAAARRGH
*with her face hidden by her hands* Obviously the most infra-dumb thing in the entire space/time/superposition manifold is my big dumb stupid mouth. I'm sorry. You're right. It was a horrible thing to say and I'm a great big jerk.
*still looking utterly mortified* β¦and if it's any help, if technology and stuff gets developed on this timeline a lot like it did on mine β¦ you probably won't die. Mind uploading won't be around for another 130 years, but with sirtuin-agonists and telomere lengthening and *CRINGE* oh stars I'll shut up now

Alex: *is taken a bit back by Morta's reaction, thinking she'd probably argue back, and it slowly dawns on her what she just said to her friend, and how she said it... damn it... why did she have to be so defensive sometimes, she sighed, and then said*
No... I'm sorry... I know you didn't mean to be rude... I shouldn't have yelled at you like that... I just... get real upset sometimes when people generalize... but I know I do it too... I'm sorry... *looks sadly up at Morta, and holds out a dirty hand* Please forgive me

*Clasps Alex's hand gratefully, shakes it; still blushing* Dude, I'm the one in the wrong here. I'll forgive you if you forgive me I guess it's the sort of thing I just got into the habit of saying to wind up history teachers an' justify not payin' attention in their classes β¦ I never expected to be a time traveller. But that's no excuse now that I am in the past, you know?
Also, there's plenty stupid about my time, too. That whole techno-utopia thing where everyone gets everything they need and no-one has to work unless they want to β¦ that's not what we've got. It's what we could have, if it wasn't for stupid copyright laws & shit.

Morta: The CEO's an' bankers an' stuff that tell the government wot laws to pass an' stuff - no-one ever votes them in, do they? It's like the guy they asked, "why d'ya keep robbin' banks", an 'e said, "cause that's where the money is." A revolution dun't necessarily 'ave to strike at the state - ya jus' gotta strike where the power is! Which is usually also where the money is.

Alex: NO!... morta... think of all the people we'd affect! We wouldn't know what we where doin'! plus it would be super illegal plus it would change the future and I don't wanna get arrested as a terrorist and locked up in a juvie!
Nick: Wait... if you have that much power... Wouldn't it be better to like... help do some cancer research or something instead... you know... fold protiens, search signals for Aliens? I've been running that kind of thing since I was little...
π: 0 β©: 1
TalkyMeat In reply to StefanPWinc [2013-12-02 16:28:24 +0000 UTC]
Morta: Oh, I am thinkin' of all the people who'd be affected. Imagine zeroing out everyone's debts, all at once! That'd make a nice weekend project - and a course it's illegal - takin' on the powerful always is! *chuckling - it's impossible to tell whether she's joking, serious, or both* But that's just another kinda standin' up to bullies.
But sure, I got a decent bio-sim suite on 'ere, if ya wanna get rid of a few cancers. *taps a few buttons on her handheld, brings up Oncophage Design Suite, tosses it to Nick* That'd change the future too, but a' course, that's the point. This isn't my timeline, so there's no risk of paradoxes. Even if it was, it would just'a split the timelines.

They can get pretty vindictive about shit, yanno?
*to Nick* - Oh, 'ave a look in the homework section if ya wanna see some cancer-cures I done earlier.

*Nick comes over and sits down with the girls, and gently pushes his bowl in Alex's direction, trying to politely refuse, meanwhile Alex is munching down on it quickly, and has already managed to spill some of it on her bib*
Alex: If you're going to stay here for a while, we might need a better hiding spot than the barn... we can't keep everyone out for a couple of weeks... maybe somewhere deep in the forest would be better?

Morta: Hehe - a lot of the stuff I used to do for fun before the accident wuz β¦ well, primitive, if that's what ya wanna call it - like bikin' an' fightin' an' climbin' stuff. *chowing down enthusiastically* One thing I used to love doin', when me an' Dad showed up in a new city on a new world, I'd find out wot the absolute roughest part'a town wuz, refab my bike, go find out wot the kids there did for fun. *speaking through her food* Got me into some amazin' punchups, but more often I'd be let in if I could prove meself - I just love 'ow creative kids get, turnin' spaces wot weren't made for 'em into playgrounds. Playgrounds made by kids is always gunna be better'n wot grownups scared a' bein' sued make! *laughing through her food* Dad wuz terrified when 'e found out wot I wuz up to - but interested too. See, 'e's a research architect - really interested in ad hoc architecture an' the ways folks adapt their environments to their needs when they ain't got resources an' shit - did a lot of work on squatter communities before I wuz born. We even talked about doin' a paper together - On the Playgroundisation of the Found City. I'll 'ave a few things to show 'im if I make it 'ome. *laughing*
*spotting Nick's untouched bowl* 'Ere, Nick, tuck in! Yanno yer brain consumes one third a' yer body's energy-budget. An' I promise, it's a lot nicer than it looks. The wild garlic really makes it!
(Yeah, I think this started up as separate from 'Consumer of All', but then the pot-o-food showed up and it got relocated. Then we also have Morta, Nick and Alex planning to take on corporate evil & a corrupt headteacher in 'Nick's Insubordination'; and (somewhat fallen into desuetude) Future Alex & Morta, aged 7, scheming to release remote-controlled frogs into Dr. Svensen's office, in 'Punchbuddies')

Morta: *to Alex* Definitely lots of engineers β¦ farming is more a hobby for rich biologics than a job, really. Prolly the nearest thing would be, like, a park ranger, a conservationist, a terraforming specialist or an ecosystems manager. Land outside a' towns an' cities is mostly either recreation ground or wild parkland. We don't need farming for food, cuz a high-rez foodfab can make almost anything, and manufacturing is either really small scale, or done in orbit - but wild ecosystems are the best thing for doin' ecosystems services. There's plenty of jobs for large-animal vets - mostly for helpin' out wild animals, or helpin' with de-extinction efforts. My auntie Lorelei's an ecogeneticist with the Earth Reclamation Authority!

Morta: Aunt L is pretty damn awesome! She has a cabin on Lake Vostok where she likes to spend the austral summer, and she taught me a bunch of cool genetic engineering tricks when I was little. She helped de-extinct loads of stuff, like the tiger, the pteranodon, an' the hyracotherion! *finishing off the food in her bowl* And she got eaten by a T. rex once!

TalkyMeat In reply to StefanPWinc [2014-01-01 16:24:10 +0000 UTC]
Morta: *giggling a little* It's OK - she had a full backup - she only lost, like, a couple of hour's memories. I can't wait till I can get a brainweave myself!

StefanPWinc In reply to TalkyMeat [2014-01-01 16:50:21 +0000 UTC]
Nick: *grumpy face* that doesn't SOUND ok... from the way you're describing it she was killed and eaten in excruciating pain... and then an exact clone was given her memories
π: 0 β©: 1
TalkyMeat In reply to StefanPWinc [2014-01-01 18:32:39 +0000 UTC]
Morta: Well - she said the other handlers told her she got her head bit off in one chomp, so it'd've been pretty quick, buuuut β¦ it's possible she wuz just sugar-coatin' it for me. She dun't remember it anyway, she restored from a backup a from a couple of hours before. But, you know, it kinda depends on wot ya mean by 'her memories' - if you mean every change bein' in the world made to her brain since birth - then, yeah, that's wot got copied to the new body, and that sounds exactly like Auntie L got a new body to me. I think since we figured out mind uploading an' stuff, people don't think of themselves as their bodies so much. My Dad sometimes runs a couple of synchronised instances of 'imself, so 'e can still do teachin' an' go to super borin' faculty meetin's, even when 'e's got a conference 'alf way round the galaxy. Once 'is memories are synced up, 'e says it doesn't make a difference which body the memory was first made in, it still just feels like 'is memories.

π: 0 β©: 1
TalkyMeat In reply to StefanPWinc [2014-01-01 19:18:55 +0000 UTC]
Morta: Eh? Nah. The new body is force-grown in a tank - it's in a coma until your state-vector is downloaded to it. There's no other person in there to get mixed up with. Dad usually just uses virtual bodies or robot bodies for teachin' an' meetin's an stuff. 'E only bothers with a second meatshell if there's two conferences 'e wants to get to on at the same time.
