so you had this in mind when you started and it ended up like you wanted?
i can never do that - i alwas have to improvise and never plan else i'll get disappointed with the end result
i bet it looks fine in a frame

I had the face in mind. I had bought a smooth canvas to try pen on. This was about 3 months ago. After a short while I knew pen on canvas wouldn't fly. Quickly sketched (with a black Prism marker) out a face and shoulders. Tossed it on the side for months--had no plans to do anything with it.
Well!! Picked it up again and started to paint in the line art which was abandoned early on (the line art). After finishing step one of the face with 2 faces on either side the trouble started. The hair for the woman were metalic gold running all the way down the canvas. One woman I gave a silver metalic dress. Add the crown over the head and you have 90% metalic paint. Didn't like it at all but had invested some time with this already--had to change sides again OVER DRIED METALIC PAINT--a nightmare in itself.
Had to change it again--wasn't happy. By this point I was getting alittle nuts. Changed it again. Every step-every color was gone over in my head--just that alone was so nuts. So, on it went. The mouth area must have 20!! at least 20 coats of paint. Three times I thought it was beyond hope--but on I went.
And on--and on. Yo know the rest. Thank God I was happy with the outcome. I was determined--determined to finish this painting--spared myself nothing--right to the very end--it is something I will never do again.
So, yes--it was planned after the start. Not one--but the sides 3 times---that was the big mistake--I should've planned this one--done the line art--and decided the main colors. I. like you, let my abstracts tell me where there going--with this one it was a poor decision. Add to that the metalic paint from the start--changing the sides, colors, etc made this an utter nightmare. I wanted to share this with you to possibly save you this wonderful experience. lol Please--message me asap if you ever get in this situation--I will know what to tell you.
This message only scratches the surface of what I went through with this--so I guess you could imagine the utter joy seeing it now--in person it's beautiful--the tones so rich--the gold and silver metalic-yes--I lose quite a bit on the net. More then with my pen and ink abstracts for sure. Ahhh--- got it out of my system. Hope I didn't bore you with this long message. You're the first person on da I've went into such detail with this painting. You can see why I guess--lol-this is a book--gezzzzzzzzzzz. Have a very happy New Year Matt

it's damn cool to hear someone's step by step process on their works, especially such an intriguing one as this
it's good that you let them tell you where they're going when you work, it's that in my opinion that makes them work so well
haha - it's impressive that you put so much work, effort an time into your abstracts - puts mine to shame

you know Matt--if you decided to do a few involving that much time--you may surprise yourself what you'd create. The average for me is--15--20hrs for a 9X12 in pen and ink. The next sizes from 20 to 35hrs.
Lonely face--because of the size and detail too about 60 hrs--that's alot of time.
Pending? that &%%%^$#@#$%% painting?
I lost track. Started that in the beginning of Nov.! Rediculous--never again. If some one wanted the original? 1,500.00 Too much? Fine--it stays right here haha Coz it's worth every penny. Known name artists would charge alot more.

yeah i always wonder about doing a huge abstract - on serious huge paper - it would take a few months cause i work etc.. but it could be done

Stepbeyond In reply to Veganvictim [2006-01-02 07:12:55 +0000 UTC]
yeah--it's different. When your used to working on 9X12 or slightly larger--then to a 18"X24" (not that big at all--what a difference in the amount of art you need to fill. Yes, it depends on what your doing. A pen and ink versus large images with paint.
Bigger then that? Months? You bet--especially if your looking to create something serious.
I see those super-sized canvases and papers?? Should I go for it? lol Now your talking mega-hrs if I stay true to my style regardless of medium.

I use paint pens when I paint--they are a pain too haha. Paint is paint. But they do have x-fine/fine/medium/broad. I can't spend for every size and color--so maintly I stick with fine and medium. If I really need an extra fine of course I get it---but I usually (as you know) work with pens.
I am almost finished another colored one. Such a pleasure having most things go right lol

I don't know--you may go into color shock lol But really--you will see a ton of images--and--you can get cool stuff out of every piture rotation--4. Figure 80 to 120 images (including the rotations)which could stand alone with slight moification. If your into that kind of thing. : )

I've looked at botha nd the full comment is on the pending2 version, however as stated there this is the view that totally captivates my attention and at this moment I can't express why this over the the flip side. Magnificent art my friend!!!!!!! So much detail, color and symbolism.!!!!

yes there is. Thx. It's so--so captivating in person--nice size--and the metallic silver and gold--the whole look is so much better. Colors deep and rich. I think I will try to get it to look alittle more like it looks here in photoshop with lighting--worth a try anyway.

What did you use on this? How big is the original? Geez, I'm full of questions this morning. Good work! I don't know if I like it right side up or upside down better... hmm.

answered a few questions already---this is one you have to give time to appreciate--viewed for a couple minutes will give you (barely) the surface of this---it has much more then the obvious.

You definitely know how to make viewers gawk and say more than, "Nice." I say, "Awesome, a girl with crazy eyes... wait, no, it's a serpent with crazy eyes... and look, more serpents! And more!..." And so on. See? It makes me stare at it. I'm jealous of you because you can see EVERY hidden thing in this picture and I probably can't ...

Stepbeyond In reply to Tibby-Kitty [2005-12-29 04:14:05 +0000 UTC]
I know--they do command ones attention although I never drew any of them with that in mind. It's my art--never intended it to be--"damn, what the hell is it" lol
It takes time to see it all. That's part of the fun. The best way is to sit back--relax and just look at it---focus on different areas. Pull the chair back from comp a few feet--dim the screen a bit. I do that on certain abstracts I view on da--like I said--it's different on comp. Don't look for anything--just look.
Another frustrating thing for me is the amount of images people don't see. You know some of my pen and inks are loaded--but I doubt the average viewer sees more then about 50% to 75% the most. If they aren't rotated--like Hell Express and others--missing all of those images. So it's the individual and how they view abstracts. My opinion is our eyes (abstract artists) tend to see more only because we see differently (view) abstracts differently. Fine artists see their work slightly different then I would.

Very true! I'm not much of an abstract artist myself, but I try really hard to appreciate it and put myself in the artist's mindset. You know, I have a few abstract pieces I did during my art class. One of them is hilarious - it's of Martha Stewart. The only problem is that some of them are on 18x24 paper and I don't like photographing them because sometimes it leaves shiny spots. Ah, what the heck. I should do it anyways. After doing these pieces, I've gotten more into abstract art. It's so far from what I normally do, so, naturally, I really enjoyed it!

thanks kitty--
take them (pictures of your art) in natural sun light with no flash of course. Before shooting make sure there's no brighter spots. If you have uniform light under a big tree or something take them there--but any natural light outdoors gives you the truest picture. Quite a few of mine were taken that way (11X17/18X24) even on cloudy days. Or, you could ask one of the people you know on da that know the subject better then me--but I read somewhere that natural daylight is one way to get a good pic without using a flash. My gallery (which isn't big) was done either in a scanner to file, or outside with a digital camera of course.

Oh--one more. Whatever vway you do it--set the timer on the camera. Even if it's on a tripod don't push the trigger. You don't want any movement with the camera when shooting your drawing. I mean none. : )
