Description I actually made this for a tutorial I am currently working on. I really like Charizard. Although the mega evolutions are not so important to me, I like that design. So I decided to use it as the motive for the tutorial. And it seems to be popular, so nice for the others, too

I basically used the body (well, a little part of it) of an Albertosaurus, I just liked that and never really did a Dinosaur before, only mixed it with other creatures. Although Charizard of course is based on a lizard, I absolutely wanted to try it for that dragon type Mega Evo. I added many horns to get the typical bulge above his eyes and at the nose. And then finally a predatory pattern for its body... Well, that's it. I hope you like it

I made a full body concept sketch for this one. A full body realistic pokedex entry will follow, too...

One question: is a mega charizard Gen I or Gen VI? I'd say Gen I...

Albertosaurus charizardus! ^^ I'm usually iffy on realism concepts of Charizard with a more dinosaurian influence, but the more I look at this, the more I like it. That beside, your actual technical skills are brilliant.

Reminds me more so of Virus Greymon from Digimon: i47.photobucket.com/albums/f18…

Woooh, Virus Greymon looks like something very interesting to draw... :3
Maybe I should consider more of Digimon in general, there are some quite awesome creatures. Thanks for the link!

Amazing! Though it reminds me more of a tyrantrum.

Thanks! Well, yeah, Charizard is usually not meant to be a dinosaur of this kind, while Tyrantrum is
Although Tyrantrum got quite a different head shape.

Wow, very lovely artwork! I love the great use of color in this piece. The contrasting colors along with the differences in light/dark really make this pokemon jump right out of the page. Love the detail with the scales as well. There are a few parts (ie, the throat area and the front of the neck) where the brushing is a little too heavy, making the lack of detail there look a bit odd, but for the most part, the detailing and textures look amazing!

I think the only critique I might have here is making the flames a bit darker to make them a tad more realistic, or perhaps changing the lighting so that the flame seems brighter. Overall, though, I'm very impressed by this painting. Keep up the great work!

Thanks so much for the detailed comment and those kind words!
Yeah, the flames seem to be a weak point indeed. I'll try to keep all that in mind for the next time

Thanks

I'm not the best when it comes to making critques, but I will say that this drawing has certainly gotten my attention. Excellent work, Stephanie. Do you have other pokemon planned to have a realistic look to them?

StephanieGrafe In reply to Omega9393 [2014-07-18 06:05:36 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much I'm glad you like it!

Well, yes, I already started on Cradily and a full body version of Mega Charizard X. There are some sketches and WIPs in my gallery somewhere
I also started on Yveltal and Lugia, but I changed my style during that time a bit so it's hard to go on with this work^^'

I really wanna do Groudon and Kyogre, too, but since these realsitic Pokemon all take so much time I don't know when I'll have time for that.
I also have to work on some commissions... But surely more and more will follow.

Would you like to see a specific one?

I was thinking Rayquaza. It is one of my favorite legendaries. I think it'll be pretty cool to see a realistic drawing of it. But it's up to you since you mentioned that you have other WIPs in progress.

Oh, I  already made a Rayquaza But this was my first one (because I like it so much, too :3) and it's not very good (as I see it now).
You can find it in my gallery Pokemon --> Realistic Pokedex. Maybe I'll redo that one day, though

How would you imagine Rayquaza?

That is a gorgeous artwork! I really like how you choose to draw the fire too and blue fire are just amazing!

First of all, I'd like to say something about the glow on the fire, it's not there of even around it. For me in the picture the fire looks more like a smoke. I think if you could make the fire a little more realistic, it'll be better. I search on Youtube and find these video on quick look, maybe you can learn something from it, take a look at this video or this one in speed painting I know they are both using orange fire, but I think you can make on using blue fire, just change the color!

Second and still about the fire, try to loose the lines on the fire. The line makes it less real, and as you wrote on the title this is realistic. Try to make the line that separate the fire and the dragon more blend in, like the line that separate the dragon and the background, you did a really good job of that.

Third is a compliment, I love the details of the scales and how none of them looks alike, and the eye shines and really realistic! I love how you draw the little horns really good whether they are small and not easily noticed. Overall your details is

Thanks so much for this detailed comment

Well, I actually wanted to use the lines for everything. The word 'realistic' is more about the concept
for the pokemon itself... But I'll keep that in mind for the next picture then. I'll create another picture of the
complete charizard, too. This was just a kind of... conceptual take of the head But the next one should
actually look realistic.

Thanks very much for the feedback :3 It's much appreciated! Thanks for taking that time!

While it looks really cool like this, I think Tyrantrum would look better with Albertosaurus xD

Charizard would be more like a pot-bellied raptor, in my personal opinion. Still, really cool and detailed

StephanieGrafe In reply to BrumbyOfSteel [2014-05-22 10:31:16 +0000 UTC]

Ye, Charizard definitely is not an Albertosaurus  that's why I really wanted to try it.
I wanna see such a dinosaur with wings, so I'm gonna do a full body painting, too.

A raptor would be a really good idea for a Charizard as a dragon. Sounds interesting as well...
Maybe an Albertosaurus X and a Raptor Y

And of course: thank you
