Description
Not much of a tutorial lol but I've been asked several times how I color hair traditionally, so I decided to show you guys the steps I go through.
Note: I normally use Bristol drawing paper but for this example I drew on cardstock... (because it was the paper that I had right next to me when I started... *is lazy* lolol ) not a very good choice to blend color pencils well though... lol anyway yeah I recommend Bristol. (Specifically, I've done the majority of my trad. art on Bristol vellum surface paper from Strathmore.)
Also! You do not have to have Prismacolor pencils, any pencils that you personally like to use can work
Colors used:
chartreuse
apple green
grass green
violet
indigo blue
canary yellow
Step 1: Started with a sketch. Drew a random girl.
Step 2: Did the outlines with the indigo blue color pencil. Then proceeded to erase the sketch underneath with a kneaded eraser. (A regular eraser works too
Step 3: Started coloring in some simple strands with the lightest green I have, the chartreuse. I usually leave white parts for highlights. (I will later go over the white with my yellow so that the white doesn't stand out too much.)
Step 4: Darkened the base color with apple green.
Step 5: Used a slightly darker green, grass green, to add more shadows. Then went over the hair with my base color, chartreuse.
Step 6: Used the violet to make the darkest shadows. I prefer using violet rather than black, because black is too strong and stands out too much in my opinion.
Step 7: Covered the highlights with canary yellow to give the hair more of a warm tone.
Step 8: Finally, I add a bit of sparkles around the hair, particularly where I want the highlights. I used, acrylic white (titanium white) then waited for it to dry before going over it with a light green marker to make it look more blended. (I simply used Prang fine tip markers. Nothing fancy.)
heehee and the girl ended up looking like my OC Kimiko xD
So that's it

what colored pencil do you use to outline the skin? do you use the same blue? and with lighter colors like the skin is it just a matter of erasing the regular pencil under it then recreating the lines or is there a way to cover the graphite sketch lines neatly?

For the skin I just go for a darker tone of the base color, depending on the character's skin tone. (Usually I use a darkish brown)
I simply draw over my sketch with the color pencil, then erase the graphite underneath. (the graphite comes off easily but the color pencil lines should stay on the paper)

ok so do you use a light graphite pencil (like a 2h or something) or do you just press very lightly?
