I knew about Uderzo and Goscinny (and of course Peyo's Smurfs). I found out about Franquin while researching Uderzo.
The only other French artists I knew about were from Metal Hurant (Heavy Metal here) ...Philippe Druillet and Moebius. Who just blew my mind as a child.

The only thing I knew from him was this [link] parody of American cartoonists...which I thought was hilarious. I didn't know it was him until I looked it up today. Obviously I like his style too.
