Description I swear, this is the snowflakes' fault for being so fun to draw.

I wanted to try a different color scheme this time, so I started with yellow on green. It made me think of a forest fire, so I added some brown trunks to go with it, and dappled the green background.

The sparks were my mother's idea, and I think they make a great addition.

This pattern is available as a print on DA, and on physical products in my Society6 store  and my RedBubble store . If you want to see what it looks like on coffee mugs, pillows, backpacks and more, check out this collage .

Hello again from ProjectComment , this time for this Big Comment Contest idea. Usually, we reserve this natural pattern to snowflakes. But here I see you are applying the concept to something very really different: fire. I am not sure how to dub this: Flameflake? Fireflake? Heatflake? I leave it to you to coin up a proper term for this kind of visual treat. Which, by the way, also resembles a flower. Maybe it resembles more a flower than a flake. A fire flower, to be precise. Maybe this is how a real-life fire flower should look like in a real-life Mushroom Kingdom. Not that fancy, cartoonish render as found on those Nintendo games – this one is the real deal!

Alright, enough expository banter and let’s go to the real details that matter: symmetry and colors. The flower (ehem, flake) itself is unquestionably symmetrical across all twelve axes of symmetry: the six axes centered along the six “molten dendrites” (which look like glowing bushes to me) and the six axes centered along the six “scorching petals” sandwiched between pairs of dendrites. The brown trunks growing beneath the dendrites & petals also follow a synchronized symmetry, although in this case it is hard to envision the symmetry because of the square frame surrounding the fire flower ahem flake, which makes some trunks look longer than others (had you chosen instead a round or hexagonal frame, then their symmetry would be more apparent). The symmetry that graced this flower/flake and its trunks, however, slightly falls apart when it comes to the glowing embers swirling around the flake/flower in a counter-clockwise sense: some of the embers are slightly shifted in position relative to the trunks, the dendrites, and/or the petals. The stark differences in the “sparks” are more apparent near the tips of the dendrites, on the thickest trunks emanating from the petals, and between each dendrite & its enighboring petal. This is where you had to be somewhat more careful, unless you intentionally threw in an “invisible wind current” to mess up with the sparks/embers’ overall coordination.

As for colors: that fiery orange is surely the opposite of the blues that dominate standard snowflakes. The various continuous shades of red, orange, & yellow that you will find in a typical wildfire, a matchflame, the coils inside a broiling oven, etc./など/usw. are present here to tell us that this thing is seriously burning with feelings of natural “fury” (yes, wildfires get really angry & furious: fire & fury could be a subtle subtitle here). Glowing orange & yellow on the “molten dendrites”, and red/orange/yellow on those petals (which also resemble some kind of line patterns I have seen in Arabic art & architecture) – I don’t think there were other color options more appropriate to this unusual manifestation of natural art. Also, I like the way that you limited the darker, red hues to the bulkier components of this flower/flake –the petals & the core– while restricting the slimmer components –the dendrites– to just lighter orange/yellow hues, thus balancing the whole act of violently-vibrant coloring.

You thought outside the box and came up with the most unique thingy I could ever imagine in symmetric art. Actually, something defiant relative to the laws of physics: whereas symmetry brings a notion of perfect order –more feasible in cold environments–, heat is often seen instead as a representation of entropy –or chaotic disorder– that could be the opposite of symmetry. Symmetry vs. entropy – order vs. disorder – cold vs. heat. Yet here you brought order (symmetry) to heat – at least to the flower/flake itself, because the tiny embers/sparks seem to obey instead entropy for the reasons I stated above when I pointed out some lack of symmetry on them. It was a nice treat to my eyes, and in spite of the small flaws concerning the sparks, I applaud your unique effort here. Thankee!

Wow, that was a wonderfully detailed and insightful comment! Thank you so much for taking the time to share it. I'm sorry it took me so long to reply; several of my pictures got added to ProjectComment contests during a very busy month, so I fell WAAYYYY behind on my replies.

You make a good point about the sparks, and you've clearly got a very keen eye. They put up a fight when I was trying to position them; the two I was using as a reference all seemed to line up with the petals approximately the same, but the ones farthest out kept looking different from each other, until I finally said "close enough".

Hello, commenting on behave of ProjectComment ´s Big comment contest.

I think that combination of shape and colour on this showflake is very interesting. Usually, snowflakes are cold, but this one seems like made with fire and even your description compares it to forest fire. I think that it´s interesting to sometimes experiment with unusual colour palette for usual things. Fire colours make this snowflake look original and eyescatching.

As for the shape, I like that it resembles traditional snowflakes, while having those sparks-like fireflies around (sorry, dunno how to call them). I think that they look very nice, like tiny sparks flying off the burning fire, which gives sense of motion to the picture.

Overall, the colours are blended and shaded very nicely, making it look like burning.

The only tip for improvement is about background. I think that those red tails coming out of the snowflake aren´t completely symmetrical. It would be complicated to describe, so I marked it here:

(click for closer view)

See the green marked tails? The one going from upper left to lower right is corresponding to tail going from lower left to upper right. Most of the other tails look more or less symmetrical, but these two don´t. I think that with all picture being very symmetrical, the background should keep this symmetry too.

Thank you so much for the detailed compliments and the suggestion! I'm sorry it took me so long to reply; between a busy couple months and a sudden huge influx of comments, I've been lagging behind.

I took a closer look at the tree trunks you marked, and I'm having trouble seeing the asymmetry you mentioned. In what way do you find them asymmetrical?

Sorry for not being specific enough. I marked them with numbers this time:

Numbers 1 and 2 are symmetrical (by the diagonal axis), also 3 and 4 are symmetrical (also diagonal axis). But 1 and 3 aren´t symmetrical (by the vertical axis) and 2 and 4 aren´t symmetrical. All other tails look symmetrical with each other, so this caught my eyes. There´s nothing really wrong about it, I just noticed it because everything else in the drawing is very thoughtfully symmetrical.

Ah, so you're saying that 1 and 3 don't match each other, and 2 and 4 don't match each other? Thanks for the clarification. The diagonal axis is the only one I was really paying attention to when I made those tree trunks - each trunk was supposed to match the one on the opposite side of the fire flake from it - so it doesn't surprise or worry me that the two on top and the two on bottom don't match each other. Thanks for pointing it out all the same.

Oh, I thought that it was supposed to be symmetrical by horizontal and vertical axis. I didn´t realized that you were using the diagonal one. My mistake.

No problem. I appreciate you pointing it out just in case.

Constructive and relevant commen), I've been given the task to seek out works and share my insight.

For starters, I feel like this is a nice companion piece to the "serated sky" one you made, with the points being more smoothed out and the black background acting as a sort of night sky touch to differentiate the two. The shades and gradients used don't hurt either to help sell the point of "opposites".

My only gripe is that I technically feel as if the red in the background could be spread out a little more thrown in with a possible soft blend.

All in all, a great piece.

Thanks for the feedback and suggestion! Sorry it took me so long to reply; so many of my pieces were included in that contest that I've had trouble catching up with the comments haha.

The brown parts in the background are tree trunks, which is why I didn't blur the edges. I appreciate the suggestion, though.

Cool. It  looks   similer   to  the  scene  in  Peter  Pan: return   to  NeverLand.
