Fanart Friday for May 31, 2013. (TUMBLR LINK ).

OOOOOoohkay, so I have this little headcanon which ties the 2012 series to 2003's Same As It Never Was universe (which I am strangely obsessed with and I totally have a whole little comic doodled up that I eventually would either like to write or finish drawing, but we'll see). This pic is totally 100% inspired by said headcanon, but I have another pic I'm working on that I can babble on about my headcanon for. This can work for 2012 in-canon as well, I hope, so for now we'll leave it at that, hah hah.

ANYWAY, the gist of the story leading up to this pic is that Leonardo gets injured while protecting Raphael, and being the headstrong protector he is, Raph returns the favour as an "honour" thing by carrying Leo's weapons into the next confrontation, hence why he's wearing Leo's belt and katana. I added the blue bandana in there as an afterthought, thought it was a nice touch – so Leo is with him in the battle.

See, I like to think that Raph is Leo's unofficial second-in-command, and he takes it upon himself to avenge his brothers (sort of what I kind of wish happened in 2003 after the Tales of Leo episode, though that whole saga was amazing, I hope they do something similar in the new series…) when any of them, especially his only older brother, get hurt, with or without his other brothers (though of course I'd like to think they join him despite Leo's protests ). Though now I'm picturing Raph, who's about as graceful as an elephant, just does a lot of 'stabbie-stabs' with the swords (hence the underhand grip…). Hah hah.

... And ALRIGHT I'LL ADMIT IT. I just wanted to draw Raph holding two weapons, and I really think he looks badass with the katana. OMFG, I need to have Raph drawn carrying all of his brothers' weapons. HOLY CRAP THAT WOULD BE EPIC, because Raph is such a BAMF, I could totally see it.

Oh, I'm so proud of myself! I just realized that I actually put the correct sword in the correct hand!! AH HAH! (the short sword is supposed to be in the left hand… yes, I'm a total dork, just ignore me…). TOTAL FLUKE I SWEAR! I mean... I MEANT to do it!

Anyway, now about the pic. I don't know what prompted me to do this one digitally... I think because I had the idea in my head when I was at my computer and I just had to draw the rough sketches (there were three pre-doodles to this one…)… And then it just continued from there. "Inking" took a week because I was being so persnickety with the lineart, and colouring took another week because I couldn't pick a style and go with it (as you can probably tell... lookit that mish-mash of colouring styles on this…). I also spent WAY more time on the texturing details then I really needed to (I'm talking like, 20 minutes on the plastron with a gritty brush just to add speckles you really can't see in the final... *sigh*). BUT, overall, I'm very proud of this one. It doesn't look as awful as I thought it would, and I had fun with it. Learned a few things for next time, and I learned that I REALLY don't need 100 layers in one pic. Hah.

I would appreciate some constructive criticism on this piece, such as colouring tips, since I'm trying to learn some digital techniques.

I hope you all like this pic! I'll try to give you guys more non-turtles art soon. I just can't help myself... I quite enjoy drawing the new characters. Cheers, all!
