...DnD really isn't that complicated, but there is a learning curve. If it's your first time playing, use a pre generated fighter character. Simple.Sexy time in a few more pages. I swear!

Certainly looks complicated...(I'm a World of Darkness kind of person).

D&D is the 'trial by fire' option. And just think... modern D&D is NOTHING compared to the old school stuff. The main thing to remember with newbies is just to say 'Don't worry.... we can always figure it out as we go along, it's nothing to get worried about, the story's the thing.'
Though a pregen character is always an easier way to go.
I personally PREFER to do it the hard way though. If you can't take the frustration of learning the system, you're really not going to handle what happens if the group starts to get pissy with each other!

Dude, do I have stories for you! I mean, I had a hard time of it (I started with 5e building an Elf Bard, a magic casting support class character with little understanding of what support class implied). It was several months of me being the pissy one, but I would never take it personal or take it out on the other players. And I always came back a little smarter and better prepared. I was also fortunate enough to have a cool group that I was playing with. I don't get pissy no more.
A few other players I know, well...I watched a 15-20 year friendship end and three people get evicted from the house they were renting because of one player that took some in game actions personal. I will share the full story in a journal entry one day, but not for a while (maybe January).

Yeah, I've seen some pretty crazy stuff myself. Friendships ended among it all. You learn things about people in games they cover up very well otherwise!
I'm glad you came out wiser and more level for the effort, though. Always awesome when that happens!

Rogue I think would better suit Meg. It's better than trying to start as a magic caster. And it gives the player more of a role than beat it till it dies. Hell my rogues deal dope damage after I learned how to use them properly.

I've been looking at rogue with great interest. A friend of mine plays a Tiefling Rogue and he is awesome! Right now I'm on Tiefling Bard from the college of swords. Haven't had a chance to put him through his paces yet. We'll see how it goes.

First rogue I made had an 18 with a +2 dex racial bonus. I actually delt more damage than the party fighter at the time with finesse and ranged weapons. Not to mention I relied on items like caltrops, ball bearings and anything out of the ordinary to set traps.

My Bard has a rather high dex (I got lucky!) and when I got the Additional Magical Secrets from the College of Lore, I picked up Hail of Thorns, so now when I fire my crossbow, it is an unstoppable volley of pointy death!

Agreed! "You should play a Cleric. We could use a Cleric." For those who get it, this tells you a lot about Val's character.

Yep Pregen fighter who just hits things until they stop moving is usually the best for a first timer: Simple and incredibly satisfying to play

It certainly looks that way. Haven’t played A fighter myself yet. I’m a tad obsessed with spell casting. ^^

Ahhh, the learning curve of the spell users. I've found that a Druid can be a friendly spellcaster for the greenhorn.
But I can understand her frustration. I was like that when I rolled my first Cleric.
Hope she sticks with it, though.

This was my experience putting together my first character. My own fault. Listening to how the game worked and I was like, "Wow! The Bard sounds like fun!"
I was such a fool...

I know that pain. First time I ever played the game, I tried a rogue. I recall the DM being frustrated that I didn't know how a Rogue worked (what is Sneak Attack?)
First thing one should play as is a Fighter. Short, simple, one solution to everything. No complications needed.

ugh, rogues are terrible for first timers because two weapon fighting is just SO counter-intuitive you need to take a level of fighter to make it worthwhile.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Arctic-Master In reply to Orannis0 [2019-10-06 14:58:47 +0000 UTC]
Oh no, I had a very simple mind with rogues- just stab people in the back with a knife. I still had no idea what sneak attack was, I just had a character idea in mind and just went with it. No one in the group really gave me advice to how my character worked.
I still use said character, and she's 100x better than when she started. XD

I don't think she's paladin material. Maybe... chaotic fighter/thief?
And are we positive there's no such thing as a dominatrix class?

Being rusty, I've attempted two D&D sessions recently: One as a bard, one as a rogue. You can probably guess which one I stuck with. :,)
That being said, I rarely comment on things here on DA, less so with series and the like; so I just wanted to say I absolutely adore this series! I actually want to write something along the same lines as this for my characters (with a side helping of a significant other's characters, too), and reading the shenanigans in between the kink just fills me with my own ideas. So, in short, this comic's been a real inspiration. Thank you so much for sharing your work!

This so reminds me of my first time. Thankfully, I had a simple fighter that I used, but man was it complicated... Then again, this was back in the days of D&D 3.5 and boy howdy, that was an over complicated system by the time I got into it.

I've been told 5E really simplified things. I started with 5E so I can't judge. Now that I know how to play properly, I love it!!!

Agreed! I had a rough time of it when I started because I was playing a bard, which complicated things at the time. I also remember character creation taking between three and four hours, but it was like a party so that was alright.

dylsonic In reply to StereoscopeComics [2019-10-05 17:39:51 +0000 UTC]
Ah I see I've gotten to the point where I can mechanically get a character done in under an hour or two. But hey at least you enjoyed it and thats what the game is about

Absolutely! And once you’ve created a character once, you can do it again much more efficiently.
