Description These are various layers that were rendered separately to optimize render times and system memory. The scene was originally set up in its entirety, and the lighting tested with numerous renders done at 1/4 resolution.

Once the lighting was set, various copies of the scene were saved out in which the various elements were isolated.

I tried numerous setups for the space-suited figures, most of which were discarded. By rendering things separately, I had maximum control of all aspects of the image when assembling the final composite in Photoshop.

All the 3D modeling and rendering were done using Lightwave 3D. Textures are either image maps painted in Photoshop, or procedurally generated at the time of render.

The final image "The Coming Storm" can be seen here: [link]

I had to break this and other scenes apart because the render time was so long - hours of waiting

Sometimes the road to reach the final is desperate.
Even better is to stop and wait for the next day.
Everything is easier with a fresh mind.

Nice to see how you broke it down. It's always fun to look over someone's shoulder as they work

I found all these elements, and thought "Hey, I can see the truck" - so I made this little paste-up. I kind of liked the yellow "civilian" worker suits - but it might just be a personal quirk

Oh, I caught that yellow suit detail too! You have at least one other who appreciates it... or at least "shares your quirk".

I loved the colored suits in 2001

Yeah, baby, YEAH!
They took the NASA ID/commander's stripe concept to its logical conclusion.
