Description
This is a test render of the vehicle shown in "The Coming Storm" [link]It's an unfinished scene, nothing too amazing - but the vehicle is a bit easier to see without the blowing snow added in the finished painting
At this stage, the vehicle was nearly complete, but still had some "temp" textures and materials. The setting also changed quite a bit - at this point, the vehicle was parked on a large landing platform situated on top of a tall industrial structure - similar to an offshore oil platform.
The vehicle and platform were modeled and rendered in Lightwave 3D, with a mix of procedural textures and image maps painted in Photoshop. The suited figures were from a separate render test, and were pasted in to previsualize how the figures would look next to the vehicle

Very interesting design. Background add to the overal dramatism of the scene.
Approved for high gravity planets!

It's definitely made for very harsh environments!

Although you said this was just a test render but the lighting here was really well done

Looks damn awesome. all the colors, design, composition.. super.
how did you achieve such blurry/paintery/soft render effect?

steve-burg In reply to Dekus [2010-09-28 14:40:02 +0000 UTC]
Thanks
The soft look is from a little bit of Photoshop tweaking. I always feel like the straight rendered image is just a little bit too crisp, so I do a little bit of retouching to soften the edges and adjust the contrast. It looks very similar, but feels more natural I think.

I agree - and also it would be exciting for the cars that you can flip out of the way to clear the path

The impression is that it would be very articulate and could change itβs silhouette quite a bit, and thereβs a lot of hydraulics under the various sections. Looks like it could have came from the same factory that produces military βMechsβ. ; )

Yes indeed - this vehicle can change its shape quite a bit
There's definitely a "mech" flavor to it as well - I started out aiming for a construction vehicle style, but by the end it had taken on much more of a sci-fi mech appearance

Steve you're vehicles are sooo cool - always interesting looking and at the same time realistic - i love looking at em Does the legroom of the driver continue down underneath the cab a bit? it looks like you might have to squeeze in to fit if you compare it to the people in the suits
π: 0 β©: 1
steve-burg In reply to Regulus36 [2010-09-23 05:38:20 +0000 UTC]
The guys in the suits might not be in the right scale (they are composited in). The driver's legroom does f=go below the window, yes. Probably, this isn't completely "occupant friendly" but it was mainly designed as the external shape. I think the guy fits, but he might not be in a comfortable position

Who needs comfort? after all if your living on this world, you might forget what it is in the first place

I would guess everyone in a place like this is trying to sock away some cash - so they can get out of there as soon as possible

it has been a lot of fun to zoom into this and study the pieces . i've built most of this in my mind , while also trying to thing of other ways to do it ... fun i say !

I know the "build it in your mind" phenomenon - it's kind of great when it happens almost spontaneously.
If you want to try and model it - or do your own take on it, by all means give it a go

It's entirely up to you. Or you could make something similar but not have to duplicate it. Whatever you like

It's nice to see a clearer view of the design. MAN, I wish I had this one as a Tonka when I was a kid Pretty neat and rugged, and the aft cab is a cool design. I like those hubs, too. I think I have a "utilitarian hub fetish". Hub design is often a make-or-break "cool factor" for me. Is there any functional reason the cab is canted forward? Does the cab assembly move? Forward/Back, Up/Down?
