I really like the dynamic of the picture, it seems that the front of the main ship has arrived while the rest of the body is still in some kind of distortion movement

I like your sketches a lot. Takes me back to the days when I did editorial work for Isaac Asimov's SF Mag and later at Amazing Stories (back in the 80s). I always enjoyed seeing the cover concepts and how they turned into the finished pieces -- all hand-painted back in those days.

I've slowly come to the conclusion that I really prefer the older science fiction - with occasional exceptions, of course.
The desire to steer my own personal art in that direction is very deliberate

Really digging this suggestive style you do with repeated variations of basic forms...use much of those custom shapes for this or just brushes?

This is mostly brushes - and mostly the soft and hard edged round brush. Just lots and lots of layers to build it up!
