Description

Kaliopi is a foundling.

No one knows where she came from or where her biological parents are nor if they are even alive. No one knows if her appearance one cold winter morning in a seemingly random cow field in rural Kentucky, is the result of intentional abandonment or an accident, or possibly a Superman situation were dropping her off in a foreign place in hopes a stranger would see to her care was preferable to some unknowable alternative.

But luckily, a stranger did find her and take her in. She was an infant, barely able to crawl and tripping constantly on her long, low hanging ears. Clothed only in a wrap of rough - but clean - cloth, it was clear from the moment that the farmer found her that she was inhuman but well nourished and likely a year old. Originally, the farmer and his family were completely unsure of what to do with the child. Having just recently welcomed a baby of their own into the family, the new parents were freshly prepared to handle childcare and were loath to see this strange calf go without or be pawned off to either the government or someone else that might mistreat her.

Naming her Kaliopi after one of their grandmothers, the couple bonded with the baby minotaur almost as quickly as she bonded with them. Realizing that alerting their neighbors to Kaliopi's existence might not pan out well - the world was still reeling from the arrival of the No Moon arcship and the reptile-like E.S.S.O.s aboard it - they kept her secretly until the following summer by which time the child was already starting to take her first steps and clearly showed a developing human-like intelligence.

While her father likes to talk up the process by which she became officially part of their family and was extended legal personhood, in reality the rapid changes brought on by the aliens in every facet of society, but particularly the chaos it caused in the legal system - allowed them to have Kaliopi granted a SSN and they legal guardianship with only a handful of forms filed and a collective sigh of defeat from local and federal agencies.
