Wonderful picture of a very under-rated movie, my favourite science-fiction film (along with Contact) and possibly my single favourite movie of all.

"Hyams made a very warm, human film, with some great characters, its a nice story", I agree entirely, if there is one word I would use to describe the movie it would be 'humane'. Uplifting, exciting, mysterious, awesome in the original meaning of the word, 2001 is certainly a more worthy film but I much prefer 2010. As you suggest I think Hyam's made the right decision in not trying to copy 2001, 2010 is a sequel done right. Sorry, I'm fangirling all over this one, I think I'll watch it again this weekend

Nice job! You got the dusty orange red color from the movie just right. I always liked this movie & Roy Scheider's role. Answers some deep questions proposed in 2001 in a feel-good way. Although I wondered why they decided not to show the Chinese misadventure from the book, instead went with a Russian probe on Europa.

Awesome! LOL.  really is a nice piece of work man.  I loved the book, but the movie was awful, saved only by lines like that.
That one deserves a remake, I'd love to see the part with the chinese ship on europa. Oh and no floating hair brushes!
Thanks for the laugh man

It wasn't awesome, but its often underrated by its association - its biggest problem is that its a sequel to one of the most highly regarded science fiction films of all time.  Hyams supposedly approached Kubrick and asked if it was OK to make the sequel to his film, Kubrick basically advised Hyams to make it his own. Hyams made a very warm, human film, with some great characters, its a nice story and really helps explain the surface narrative of 2001... A lot happens in this film and it deals with the big issues on a more accessible level, but again that's probably tedious to someone who's studied 2001... If it were standalone it would be regarded more highly I think.

I see no need for a remake, especially when the next episode is still waiting for its time on screen, and anyway, who's gonna commission a scifi film set 4 years ago? Americans hitching a lift with Russian spacecraft is consistent anyway!

My own beef with the picture is the scale of the ships, I quickly realised when building Discovery and Comrade Leonov that Hyams had increased the size of Discovery by a very large amount, which would be fine but now the interior Pod bay set is far too small... if you scale Leonov to the size of a 2001 Discovery, its way too small to accomodate humans, let alone the huge interior pod bay and so on... so the original book idea works much better from a realism POV, and its more consistent with the prequel, but the SM design is far more iconic and contrasting with Discovery, its very 80's style of industrial design still looks pretty cool and brought the production up to date with that ere - again I think Hyams making things  his own.

I agree with you in that if Hyams film was a stand alone it would receive more charitable treatment, at least from me,
but is not a stand alone film. You are right about the art direction making the film era specific, it will remain so. 2001
however, lives in an era of it's own. I will always lament the decision to make the picture, as you say, warmer and more
human because, I think, that this decision robs the film of the gravitas that 2001 had in such obvious abundance.

The omission of the Chinese team was the biggest mistake of all.  The mystery of the secret preparations and the cinematic
drama of that final scene on Europa, are what made the book such an unforgettable addition to the story.  Having these elements
excised from the film version left me sorely  disappointed.

In spite of all these things, I am a fan of Mr. Hyams and 2010, and I think your idea that he wanted to make a film about people is
spot on, and it is the actors and some great dialog that make this film so much fun.

Interesting thoughts man, and a cool image.

I see it as the story of Floyd and HAL's redemption, Hyams engaged with the audience on that level and cleared up a lot of the mystery of 2001.  I'm sure difficult choices were made to keep the budget and the run-time down, make it accessible to an audience with exposition etc. If you added the Chinese, thats a lot more talking & concepts to convey! it may have left an audience who wanted some answers and a good time on a friday night feeling a bit lost and confused.

Its not my favourite, but it is a solid scifi-flick.  From my POV, playing armchair director and script writer, maybe they could have cut back in other areas to make room for another element, but I wouldn't call it a mistake because I think they showed that the story still works without that element at all - to me it doesn't feel as if anything is missing, they did well to pack everything in, imho.

I appreciate the comment and the discussion, thanks!

btw, Discovery and Leonov were built on commission for a resin model maker - they're 3d printable in hundreds of parts - these were really difficult builds! You can pick up both ships as scale kits in a set from www.admiraltymodelworks.com/

Did I understand you to say you built these wonderful models?

yes of course, if i'd used other peoples models i would have most definately mentioned them, they'd be listed in the image itself infact!

nearly exclusively I make images with my own models

Both Discovery and Leonov are composed of many separate, printable sections made from watertight meshes, a technical challenge and some compromises on detail had to be made to meet physical production tolerances... All the same i'm not sure if there's a better or more detailed version of either ship in CG or resin model form, the 2010 discovery is quite different to the 2001 version too - i'm not sure if there's even a 2010 version out there, probably just 2001 versions with a repaint.

Good heavens man!  I didn't even realize I was looking at physical models, I guess I was fixated on the quality of the images.
Please excuse my slow wittedness. Really beautiful work man, they must be breathtaking in person.

Ah, I think there might be some confusion, in the image you *are* looking at 3d computer generated graphics - a mixture of 3d rendering and digital painting.

but the 3d models are also 3d printable and built in such a way that the shapes are broken down into smaller peices for resin casting.

So its possible to obtain a physical resin copy of this 3d model, duplicated from the 3d printed parts by the company I linked to.

I have designed many model kits for various manufacturers over the years, but I only make images with the 3D / CG models.

So for Discovery and Leonov, I built the 3d models, but I have never even seen the physical version, apparently it does exist and is for sale.

You can order some inexpensive 3d prints of my work from here, very small scale pieces  www.shapeways.com/shops/coolha…

Use frosted detail / ultra detail if you get any models from anyone on shapeways.

It seems confusion is the order of the day, at least on my part.
I shall now retreat to my shell,  lest' I embarrass myself further.
Good day to you sir
