Description I had to bail at the last minute for Gen Con 2009, because of a tremendously ginormous project that was crashing down around me like chocolate walls at a fat camp.

Now those of you who've come to see me at Gen Con can attest to the madness unparalleled that permeates every cubic inch of "the best four days in gaming." By noon the first day, I typically havea stack of sketchbooks, playmats, and other paraphenalia, covered in post-its of the dreams those hopeful clean pages whish to be impregnated with.

Unfortunately, try as I might, many of them go home with nothing but the tear-stains of disappointment. There's just so little down time. Honestly, the first thing that happens when the floor closes to the attendees, is I sprint at full speed to the bathroom, and take a fifteen to twenty minute wizz.

So anyway, a very nice gal and her husband were there this year, and my wife relayed the story of how they were disappointed they couldn't get a sketch from their favorite artist. (Who was not me.) From the artist's point of view, this is quite understandable. But, being the grubby little opportunist I am, I attempted to usurp the position of favorite artist by making sure they had something to show for thier Gen Con experience.

Maybe I shouldn't be telling you this. It could set a dangerous precedent...

My goodness.

Miss Nalaar cleans up quite nicely when she's not covered in ash and on fire.

Wow, she looks cute and sexy at the same time
Great work, i like her face and hair alot ^^

Wish i could ever go to a con and grab something like that, but i think i would feel bad to do that if the artist is already overwhelmed with requests

Well, you shouldn't feel bad about asking. Just don't feel bad either if your artist can't get to it. I try to be up front about the chances it'll get done. Which I hope comes across okay. It's hard to tell someone "Yeah, I'll be here for the next three days, but chances are I won't actually get twenty minutes to do your sketch. (Mostly because of the other folks ahead of you.) Sorry."

She looks cute. You know. When she's not setting things on fire...

I think this is the first drawing I've ever seen of Chandra *not* burninating everything, and it looks good. Nice and peaceful for a change...

I've actually got another non-burninating Chandra painted, just waiting for Wizards to show it off so that I can, too.

She's really pretty--just slightly exotic, and the goggles are fantastic. I'd be proud to take this home from a con. (I've often wondered about the experience of the artists behind the table, whether it's fun or not, and your comments taught me about that a little. I'd hate to irritate an artist by asking them to do a sketch when they've had a long day, but then, I am paying them...)

I can only speak for myself, but I'm happy to do sketches and such. But, with everything that is going on at some of the bigger cons, chances are I can only actually get to a handful. Usually by the end of the first day, I've already got far more requests than I'll be able to finish.

I let folks decide if they want to pay. It's kind of an odd issue. When you charge, there's a built-in culling of folks just fishing for free stuff. Even if it's just a few bucks, you'll only be fulfilling the requests of people who actually care. So far, nobody who's offered to pay for a sketch has failed to come back for it. But free ones... I usually take half of them home. So I end up with two stacks. The paid requests get done first, and the free requests get done first-come-first-served.

Really? I don't think I've ever seen artists doing free sketches at a con. (Mind you, I haven't been to too many.) On dA, yes, but...you have to pay for the booth! Nevertheless, that is pretty awesome, and your reasons make sense. Thanks for the info. ^_^

Been there man, it's really dissapointing when you cant get a sketch from your favourite artists, specially when a lot of shitheads pollute the con artists just to sell their sketches on ebay.

I keep all art I comission because that's why I comission it for, and if I'm ever as good as to be drawing sketches at a con, I'll try to make sure to do so for those that will appreciate it and dissapoint the ebay bugs instead.

SteveArgyle In reply to RoCueto [2009-09-13 03:44:53 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. And depending on the Con, there can really be next to no time to actually put into sketches. It sucks to have to return someone's sketchpad with nothing in it. I spend alot of time on the other side of the table, and I've gotten some amazing sketches by my favorite artists. I wish I could do that for every last person who'd enjoy having one of mine.

For how long have you been practicing? ^^

SteveArgyle In reply to PariahJack [2009-09-24 21:09:06 +0000 UTC]

That's a good question. Like everybody, I did a little of this and that since I was a kid. I guess I started getting serious about art when I was fourteen or fifteen. Mostly because of comics. I kept at it through high school, though at a diminishing rate. There were girls there.

After high school I went to college, figuring I'd go into some scientific discipline. But, a combination of the lack of discipline, money, and brains conspired against me. About my third year in, I noticed a job opening at a local CG cinematics house. I completely conned my way into a job there, and was there for four or five years. It was CG stuff, and the place was small enough that I did a little of everything. So, not a lot of practice drawing and painting, but still quite artistically challenging.

Then I moved over to a company making Playstation games, and I was a modeler there for about five years. Again, not alot of direct art, but still visual.

Then, I decided to go out on my own. The first couple of years were spartan, but it actually didn't take that long to build up a client base, and now I'm usually overbooked and turning away 80% of the jobs that come my way.

Kind of a weird answer, I know. But no number of years I could give you would be accurate.

So all i have to do , is practicing a lot and then i have a slight Chance of becoming as good as you and other people are? XD
Because i really wanna bring my Ideas on Paper some day^^
Big THanks to you , for that really helpful and interessting answer XD

SteveArgyle In reply to PariahJack [2009-09-30 00:09:41 +0000 UTC]

Yep. All it really takes is practice and study. If you're doing that, then chances are you've already got the third ingredient, which is the desire to progress. With those things, it's just a matter of time to simmer.
