Description
Vader emerges from his meditation chamber.I have long wondered what he does in there. I imagine it's the universes coolest gaming console. Or maybe it's soundproof, so he can cut loose and listen to tween pop songs while oohing-and-ahing at kitten videos online. Or maybe it's a combination hot tub and margarita machine! ...Yeah, I know it's probably a 360-degree virtual pornsphere, but I want to give a guy the benefit of the doubt.
And besides, I have to be careful what I say about Lord Vader. This guy can strangle someone who mildly displeases him from across galaxies. I know that now he's just a floating spirit or whatever, and he's supposedly all redeemed and nice and junk. But I don't want to push my luck.
Vader may very well be my first icon of awesome. My parents tell me that Star Wars was the first movie I ever saw. And "forever did it dominate my destiny." One of the best baddies of all time.
For Star Wars Galaxies. Copyright Lucas Arts and Sony Online Entertainment. Art directed by Roger Chamberlain and Derek Herring.
Chestplate by Hebrew washing machine scrapyard. I'm not even kidding. The first Vader costume was seriously cobbled together from junk, including a washing machine coin slot. The Hebrew words were the inspiration for "Sith Script" which was used for the following costumes. And the words became a prophecy, instead of I'm guessing "Linens and Delicates."

In his meditation chamber, he tries to breathe without his helmet. In the book Shadows of the Empire, he uses the dark side to force his lungs to work again through his anger, it worked one time and he was happy, which disrupted the anger he was using to make him breathe, so then he stopped breathing, and needed the helmet.

I think he uses his meditation chamber to take his mask off for a while so he can breathe or something, I remember seeing glimpses of unmasked Vader in the original trilogy in scenes when he's getting out of the chamber.

Absolutely perfect. Well done.
And you and I must be about the same age, Steve, since the original "Star Wars" movie was one of the first movies I saw and I was only five.

Quite possibly the best Vader rendition I've ever seen. And I've seen a lot. I LOVE the red mist/fog stuff going on. Really looks great with the character, and black and red are just so evil and badass. The sheen on the helmet looks great; I can almost see it as real. Didn't know the chestplate was swiped from a washing machine, much less a Hebrew one. Oh, so many things I don't know.

Absolutely love this beautifully done rendition Vader.
And yes, I agree with you... his badass character is most definitely a true 'icon of of awesome' in my book, also.

Awesome...Vader's helmet is one of the hardest things on the planet to draw correctly. Especially given there are 4 different versions (4 movies). I'm partial to the original New Hope Design with the bigger "wings"

Don't I know it. Running stuff past Lucas's team is like the day of judgement. They know every tiny little thing, down to the script on the chest panel. And like you say, it's different for each time period. So you've not only got to get it right, it needs to be right for that particular time. Yikes.
(This is the Empire Strikes Back version.)

vader has proven to be difficult to draw, as i am finding while working on one similar to this piece. well done on this one. it says you used an airbrush? i am working on one with sharpie markers....very unforgiving.

I've always wondered about that chest plate. Who fiddles with it?
Is it like: "hmmm I'm feeling a little tired, I'll press this and... hmmmmmm man! That was good!
Maybe I'll press this as well and ugh ugh ugh... aahhhhhhhh...."
Or are those knobs and buttons there to temp someone to sneak of on Mr Vader and try to play a practical joke on him by pressing pain delivering buttons and then give him an excuse to choke hold the bastard?
I mean, a cyborg is self sufficient, a chest plate or any kind of control board is for non sentient atutomatons that need a tweak or fix now and then from a third party...
I know most of the last minute costume design was a haphazard put-together, but it's still funny to analize the final results for their use logic
It's like what is done with a lot of those unjustified designs in most sci-fi (or as the new stupid term says SYFY) sagas: When the official concept art books come out, some group of very creative people have already sat down to make up what every single little details stands for, invent technologies and other reasons for something to be there. Thus, you create more cult material for the fans. The "secret" terminologies and science that only the "enlightened" know about and enables them to interact as a special club.
Man... where did all that come from?? hahaha.
Maybe I should have started with what I first thought: AWESOME work! Flawless technique and great color palette

I'm pretty sure it has been explained as it being a system to balance his oxygen, vitamins, blood and all the stuff our body usually does on its own but his can't threw the damage.

You've made Darth Vader look awesome. I love the way the red lighting reflects off his mask, it gives him a demonic look. Now I know what he looks like to the people who have just failed him.
