Description
Liliana illustrates, with little room for misinterpretation, what she thinks of uninvited carolers at her door. And you know these folks probably had decent singing voices, being angels and all.
I went a little nuts researching bird anatomy for this piece. I’d always wondered just how an angel could be built to actually work. This is the first step, a plausible skeleton. Since then, I’ve been tinkering with designs that would look functional, but not too weird once the skin and such was put back on them. These ones would be mighty pigeon-chested. (I know, corny choice of words. Look, there’s just no better descriptive term. Stop yelling! I’m sorry! Don’t hit me!)
For Magic the Gathering. Copyright Wizards of the Coast. Art directed by Jeremy Jarvis.
Angels courtesy of “No Questions Asked Bizarre Engagements Escort Service.” Even though we purchased the premium insurance/replacement package, they were still peeved with the condition we brought them back in.

To date this is still my all time favorite MTG art, and you're my favorite MTG artist. I would absolutely love to purchase a wall poster of this if there's one available!

Fabulous work! I always wonder and imagine what fighting angels or demons would like and I think this is right on the money. I also like the details on her dress and boots and that she is either flying or levitating to meet and beat her foes.

That certainly explains why you have some of the best winged creature art in Magic - the effort and attention to detail in anatomy really shows.

Love it, great view of Liliana's personality. Is there any chance of you producing this into a large version for a desktop wallpaper? I think this would be an awesome one.

This is amazing and I'd love to get it on a playmat! Your site seems to be down right now, but in the ~5 minutes I was able to access it, I couldn't figure out how to purchase a mat. I believe some other art said that mats were available for purchase?

So cool seeing this.. as I actually run this card in my Magic Deck. Its a pretty amazing card actually! Some people get to do the art for the sucky cards.. you obviously got to do the art for the EPIC card.

Is it because you're always painting for MTG or are red and black your favorite colors to paint with?

I do tend to end up with a lot of red in much of my work. Magic likes vibrant, over the top artwork, so I push it a little.

This could actually be a better piece if you gave the lady a more downward, empress like appeal.
face and leg position being emphasis, she could be almost "dominating" via death that she expressed out.

I love the way you researched anatomy, and the chest bone structure for attaching the muscles used for flying. If angels were to fly, this is certainly how they would look indeed. And it gives room for imagination to try and figure out how these creatures look with flesh on.
Hat off !

Great piece of art, to bad the card isn't the best for constructed.
Nontheless, you're still the best of the new skool ^^

... probably why all the angels are female. they need space for those bones.

Your descriptions are hilarious. I think it would probably have to do with the hollow bones, but yeah, we would probably need a stronger scapula and sternum to balance out the extra bones on our shoulders...

I always figured angels in Magic just worked the way they did because they were constructs made of raw magical power. o.O

I love the look of this piece. The lighting, angle, and everything just come together awesomely. All the bird anatomy research also adds to the impressiveness, by designing things that could actually anatomically function.
