So, this is a case where some of my ignorance of Magic shines through. I try to keep up on all the stuff I work on. When I was young, it drove me absolutely batty when I'd see artwork that had obvious errors of canon. Stuff that from a player/reader point of view, was a ridiculous sin against the fiction. Well, now one of those artists, I do my damnedest to know the worlds and characters I work on. But it isn't always easy. There's alot to know. And mistakes are made. In this case, I completely forgot that Magic has only female angels. Though I should have remembered when, while brainstorming, I thought "Why aren't there any barechested dude angels? I think it's time for a little painting for the ladies. Beefcake angel, coming up!"So yeah. This is now the gender-swap angel. (Though WotC did not feel this was an appropriate name...) Two versions, one the official card, the other my original intent to give a little something back to those sweet, outnumbered girl players. I happen to prefer the guy, personally. Fair warning to future card-alter requests: You will likely get your girl angel turned into a sexy fireman.

there are actually some male angels, just not many. There are some described in Serra's Realm in the books Planeswalker and Time Streams, and the card Malach of the Dawn... though it's a planar chaos color-shifted card. That said, there aren't any male angels on Zendikar, but this could just be a kor with an angel's blessing, or something.

It's actually the picture from the Rise of Eldrazi card 'Emerge Unscathed' . It's an instant card - not a creature.
And the picture is actually identical except the little person is a girly.

There was a male angel in the planar Chaos set.... can't remember his name but it was one of the "Plane shifted" cards. Something shepperd.... Twilight shepperd maybe.

Actually, Malach of the Dawn was his name.... he was the White version of Ghost Ship, with a 2/4 Flying statline and WWW: Regenerates.
Also, don't forget Gabriel Angelfire, lol...
So male angels aren't against the grain or anything, but a Kor Angel definately is...lol which is what we have here...XD

I must say that Mirrodin, Ravnica and Rise of the Eldrazi are the 3 best stories I know of Magic the Gathering, I read the first book of Mirrodin and it was awesome, too bad I can't find any other books of them

HAha, as one of those female players and someone who ALSO had the thought 'Magic needs them some dudes with teh wingzors' and stuffs - I love this art work.
I wish it had of been the actual print, but still the one used is very nice as well.
And, I'm sure all the fans agree when we say thank you for attempting to know what it is you're doing art for and thus can keep the images you create in tune with our obvious hobby - but I for one, didn't know that angels in Magic could only be female. HA! Learn something new everyday, right?

Such amazing work. The detail you put into this is... greatness. I love the fact that I can see the aftershadow of many-layered fabric, the detail you put into the wings and skin. Not to mention the perspective; that's great!
I'm hideous when it comes to sounding sophisticated when commenting on someone's work.
And I agree: The fine ladies out there need to be represented more in Magic. I bet if they kept this version of your card it would have been the most sought-after and easiest ultra-rare in existance.

I think there may be a male angel, actually. Look for the Malach of the Dawn, because he's pretty masculine.
P.S. As a female player and a collector of angels, I would definitely like to see more male ones if this fellow is any indicator of how they'll look!

Haha, I know right? I have been collecting Magic angels since 1998 and I only have one visibly Male angel from the card game (Malach of the Dawn from Planar Chaos set). But then again as one of the earlier commentors have said, it looks like this version is a vampire turned angel.
You can't even get away with heavily armored male angels in the frikkin game.
These are one of the moments you hate the demographics. >_<
