Description
Dante is a white haired half-human, half-demon badass from the successful action video game series Devil May Cry.Spyro is a small purple dragon from the successful platforming games Spyro. The music was composed by Stewart Copeland.
But do these two characters have in common?
They were back-stabbed by their publishers, developers and right-holders with horrible reboots.
Devil May Cry redefine action games with it's stylish hack and slash gameplay. Dante was one the coolest characters in a video game. He laughs at the face and danger he loves killing demons. One of the few video game characters that gain both fanboys and fangirls.
But sadly the next game DmC, by Ninja Theory, was a complete departure with dirty settings, slow-looking combat so far and worst of all an ugly pathetic git who is supposed to be Dante. (O_O)
Blame Keiji Inafune for this. He wants games to be bland.
The first three Spyro games for the original Sony Playstation, that were created by Insomniac Games, were and still is considered possibly the best platformers that rival to Mario.
Sadly Insonmiac Games left Universal Interactive/Vivendi/Sierra/whatever to make the Ratchet & Clanks games on the PS2. Spyro began to suffer a major decline with the god-awful Enter the Dragonfly.
A Hero's Tail was an improvement but there was too many changes which it an equal betrayal to the original formula. They then decided to reboot the franchise into the Legend of Spyro which was crap. Spyro looks like a doop (or derp) head and who the fuck is Cynder-bitch?
Activision currently holds right the franchise (along with Crash) but we never see over beloved Sony mascot ever again... (T_T)
While the Devil May Cry is officially raped, Spyro has been sucking for nearly a decade and it will continue to under the thumb of Bobby Kotick.
R.I.P.

I think Prototype would be better if the story took itself less seriously because you couldn't identify with someone with powers to do all that stuff and absorbed another person.
If Prototype were ever to be made, it should be a parody of itself and retaining the fun. I'm sure the games themselves are fun but James Heller was criticized for being unlikeable as Alex despite how the former was created to address the previous issue with the first game.

"Mercer over Alex." Aren't they the one person, Alex Mercer, or was there something in the games that I would have to know by playing it?
When I saw cutscenes of Prototype 2, James was like "Fuck this" and "Fuck that" while killing others in a very unsympathetic tone like he was power-hunger instead of hungry for revenge.
Then again, you don't need to be a strong, angry, violent man with monstrous powers to be classed "inlikeable" as would be cute, bubbly high school girls who like tea and cakes (mostly "moe" characters) that are more despised than even Kane and Lynch (I'm looking at you K-ON!).

Second of all you seem to have a very subtle impression of "revenge"
I mean wouldn't you be ULTRA pissed if some guy:

Why are the bad guys always big mean spirited corporate assholes, did they think that they made something dangerous, they think it's okay to destroy an entire city just to test it out?
I understand what you say about Heller's right for revenge but that just only results with other wanting revenge against Heller. A never-ending cycle of revenge much like Kill Bill or Afro Samurai.
I have problems which is especially since the ones I hate aren't even real.
I have no real right to stamp blatant criticisms of Prototype when it takes pages from Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction; freedom to run, explore and destroy!

"ugly pathetic git that's supposed to be Dante" - hey, it's a reboot. He's a different Dante than the one you already know. Just like MegaMan.EXE (Mega Man Battle Network) to the Classic Mega Man. Just think of it as an entirely new game and you can enjoy it
At least the latest trailer is looking good

Keiji Inafune constantly moans about Japan and he was one of the people at Capcom who WANTED change that risk sales and popularity.
If DmC is a reboot then that would mean Capcom will be discontinuing the original Devil May Cry timeline and any new installment will be a direct sequel to DmC.
π: 0 β©: 1
waraulol In reply to stevemacqwark [2012-01-20 07:43:28 +0000 UTC]
...And you know that he kicked himself out of Capcom, right? So I don't know how Inafune's view would change Capcom's way.
"If DmC is a reboot then that would mean Capcom will be discontinuing the original Devil May Cry timeline and any new installment will be a direct sequel to DmC."
Then what? If it's really discontinued, they you have to see the DmC as a new series altogether. Or, you know, "don't like, don't play". It's the problem of people nowadays: They view "change" as something bad.
Plus, we don't know if the original DMC will be discontinued or not (but considering the jumbled plotlines, it's likely).

stevemacqwark In reply to waraulol [2012-01-20 10:00:13 +0000 UTC]
Wasn't Inafune partially responsible for the change in Devil May Cry and changing Dante? Inafune claims publishers are facist but he's as bad. He just wants Japanese developers to make games with bald space marines and military first person shooters. He was also behind the horrific Bionic Commando reboot (not to be mistaken with the Rearmed ones) and also the generic Dark Void.
I can't stand how Ninja Theory is essentially saying that classic Dante and his games all suck and that THEIR game will be the only good title and become a major revolution in the gaming industry and a major seller but few fans actually backing behind the game...

waraulol In reply to stevemacqwark [2012-01-20 10:16:39 +0000 UTC]
Unless some people @ Capcom (or Team Ninja) stated that they have the same thoughts as Inafune, I don't believe Inafune is responsible for anything.
I dunno, he only stated that he wanted a more "western" approach on the Japanese games developments. Not sure how exactly he would do it. Maybe you have some source on it?
And I forgot about the Team Ninja dissing the old DMC. Link plz?

I still hate Keiji Inafune. He's overrated. Hideki Kamiya is a far better developer as well as Yoshinori Ono because they're miserable sacks of crap.
Here's ones on Ninja Theory giving talking crap
On old Dante [link] and on the games themselves [link]
Capcom should've ripped the project off NT if they're going to be insulting towards their IP like that.

waraulol In reply to stevemacqwark [2012-01-20 11:17:25 +0000 UTC]
P.S: I was meant to say "Ninja Theory", not "Team Ninja". Silly me.
Hmm yeah, Inafune is not that great I believe. And Kamiya (and the Clover guys) is cool, I can see that. Not sure for Ono tho'...
And well, I kinda don't understand the messages on those links very well, but at least from the first link, Tameem said that "what was cool years ago isn't cool anymore". Of course, people's opinions differ from what is cool and not (as seen in the comments section itself, for quick reference), so yeah.
And I believe that they intentionally make the trailers look as such to surprise people upon playing the game. Sometimes, trailers lie, y'know? (This is just my theory though.)

And apparently the next Devil May Cry game is being handled by ones who HATE Devil May Cry. If I made a game and let someone else handle a sequel but that one of them says the original was shit, I would rip the project from their hands and sack them.
I know change is inevitable but Ninja Theory and Capcom are trying to FORCE change, that's never a good thing.
I bet Tameem wanted the game to be more like how it was first shown as oppose to the new trailers because Dante right now looks less ugly and more cleaner, has a better (less gruffy) voice and tells someone to get out of danger and not go as low and burning a demon with a cigarette (he must've quit before E3) and the music sounds more like proper music you hear in a Devil May Cry game.
P.S: I wasn't aware you said Team Ninja.

"And apparently the next Devil May Cry game is being handled by ones who HATE Devil May Cry."
No, they don't hate them, they realize that DMC is designed to be cool. When they said "what was cool long ago", they admit that the old DMC was cool. They just want to "revolutionize" it.
And well, seems like the fan backlash works its way, eh? I don't know if it's for the better or not, but I wouldn't judge it until I actually play the game.
π: 0 β©: 1
stevemacqwark In reply to waraulol [2012-01-20 13:48:49 +0000 UTC]
What Tameem said is still rather mean. If old Dante isn't cool anymore, then why is he in Marvel vs Capcom 3 in his Devil May Cry 3 incarnation? To me, the white-haired red-coat cocky Dante is an icon like the short fat Italian mustachio plumber Mario or big sword-wielding spiky-haired Cloud or the yellow, spear-throwing ninja Scorpion or the green-armoured space marine Master Chief.
Taking these traits away from icons will result in negative backlash which always means plummeting sales and as far as I know, Ninja Theory games are never really re-define the way we play our games, much like the sequels, DmC will bring little innovation if other games used similar mechanics before.
π: 0 β©: 1
waraulol In reply to stevemacqwark [2012-01-21 14:37:43 +0000 UTC]
Again, people's definition of "cool" differs...
"Icon", heh? It seemed more like something that people worshiped too much, to me. I'm OK with drastic changes from icons as long as there's some definitive traits that are still intact.
And btw, the game's produced by Ninja Theory, correct? I'm thinking of Arika's Street Fighter EX - as in, the game is not officially Capcom's. So if Capcom is going to use Dante, it's his original DMC appearance. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

too bad that megaman NT has a similar style.
Keiji Inafune defended western reboots, but probably it was just a way for stay in capcom good-side. that failed and he left capcom because they did not let him do an another megaman series.
the whole style of the reboot is bad since is the same shitty "colors" in enslaved. and "Just think of it as an entirely new game and you can enjoy it " then it should have a different name...and a different story...
I still did not see dante doing the badass stuff like in the old games... so no rocket surfing, no enemies surfing, surviving a sword in the heart ecc... that where the reasons because I like the original... not because a (inexistent) supposed "trend" like NT says...

it's not "entirely new" because everything come from other games...aestetics and style from Alice madness return, level anim from american macgee's alice, gameplay it's a ripoff on Dante's inferno and setting and probably some story parts are from Bayonetta (that antoniades said it was stupid...)
then the insopportable victimism of NT that really belives that everything they do is a GOD gift, and when they sell it's not because they did an unappealing pile of shit but it's always sombody else fault (you name it, they blamed everything and everyone...Sony, Microsoft, triple A games, digital delivery, Namco and more important the gamer that did not buyed their game! they do not learn from their mistakes, hell it's the 3rd game with the same color palette. they still do not understand that maybe it is unappealing... they force themself, and whoever have the bad luck to buy one of their games, to endure a "story" full of stupid Ideas and clichΓ© chars.
they are a bad copy of Ion Storm without anthing even resembling the pale shadow of the good side of Ion Storm(like good developers and graphic designer)
of course you can still be blind to everything. and accept anything from anyone.

I was so pissed off when Spyro changed and Skylanders was announced but now I own the game a few toys for certain elemental gates.
I hated Mass Effect because of how people tore apart Final Fantasy XIII and saying how superior Mass Effect 2 was but when some people tell me they like both Mass Effect AND FFXIII, not to mention Mass Effect 2 coming to PS3, I got a little bit more open-minded and got ME2 and it was really really good and far superior to XIII (but I still like that game a lot and getting XIII-2 and ME3).
I'm not as childish as most other people on kotaku or blisteredthumbs.
