Great tutorial, Steve! I especially liked the technique in which you used colored pencils as a base and then went over it with markers. Fantastic!
I'd like to ask you something. See, I have a lot of felt-tip pens which tips look like that [link]
So you said that there's no written rule on how to color but still, I'd like to know your opinion. How do you think would be better to color:
1/ By drawing close to each other parallel lines.
2/ By drawing like with a colored pencil, scribbling around.
I'm asking you because you seem to have tried many drawing medias. Of course, I'll go ahead and experiment to see what works best for me but I'll be looking for what preserves the material more as well.

It's awesome on how you were able to make things so easy to do, and easy to understand. And so much fun, too!
Now where are my old colored pencils?
Thank heaps for sharing how you do things.
Though I think I'd rather not ink. My hand strokes are too heavy, and usually end up doing very thick lineart inking ..

Traditional will always be better than CG. Yes CG may look cleaner, but Traditional takes real talent and skill.

It does not work. I mean it all does not work. Computer coloring beats it hands down.
What's the point of even doing it, if you have to redo everything on computer afterwards?

Shigin In reply to Ragewave [2010-08-24 14:58:35 +0000 UTC]
This comment seriously annoyed me. Something tells me you were spoiled with tablets and all that when you were still young, and for some reason you're assuming that's how art is always done or that art NEEDS to go through that digital process to be good. Which is far, far from the truth. How the hell can you look down on stuff like this, which is completely hand-made, as opposed to that digital stuff with all its convenience and pre-made techniques and little shortcuts?
You should seriously keep quiet when you don't know what you're talking about. Even I, as an amatuer artist, realizes these things. In fact, any sensible person probably do.
I fear this is how the future will be. With this computer generation, kids won't see the point in doing anything traditionally anymore... It's sad. It's truly sad.

Ragewave In reply to Shigin [2010-08-25 15:04:29 +0000 UTC]
I respect your talent. I carefully studied many of your anatomy-drawing articles, even though I am not an artist myself. Nor I am a kid, I would really like to become one once again, but it is too late.
I am a writer. I try to be. Looking at the way the characters are constructed on paper, I imagine how they appear in a book β similar sketchy strokes, lines.
My comment captured your attention, excellent! I am not going to waste this opportunity arguing, though I stand for my words, instead I will ask you a question.
I know one very intelligent person in his seventies. He is a head lawyer in a major legal consulting firm. I know him for a very long time, from my birth. I respect his views on things, but some do not share.
His views on art are among extremely conservative. He says that nothing of significance has been created in paintings from the epoch of classical masters. I mentioned the digital art, but he does not recognize it.
Is he right?

Shigin In reply to Ragewave [2010-08-25 16:00:50 +0000 UTC]
You know... your grammar is excellent are your comment was well-constructed, and still, I have trouble understanding what thoughts you're trying to convey. I also think you replied to the wrong person...
But anyway, I do not look down upon digital art, although my previous comment might have given you that idea. You can create some really impressive stuff through the use of a computer. You HAVE to use a computer for 3D stuff, for instance. And some stuff you may do through various softwares are just about impossible to do tradtionally. The use of computer can give you cleaner looking images more easily. However, I just don't see any of that as a NECESSITY. You acted like it is necessary, like there isn't another way or something. Fair enough if you personally prefer that digital, super-clean look yourself. I like some of that too. But just realize that there's probably millions out there who still prefer art done traditionally.
Your comment was very disrespectful and quite self-centered.

Ragewave In reply to Shigin [2010-08-27 09:54:48 +0000 UTC]
Comment was blunt, but hardly disrespectful.
Anyway, letβs look at it from my perspective. Art is a way to convey the artistβs expression, his perception of the world to the viewer. The art creation techniques are a question of tools, which change over time. Now digital tools give better results and they will strengthen their positions in the future.
With greater tools people are able to achieve greater things. The art is not an exception. Compare Neolith sculptures to Roman and you will realize it.

Shigin In reply to Ragewave [2010-09-12 23:37:39 +0000 UTC]
I get what you're saying, but I really think it WAS disrespectful. This is the way he does most things, are you're saying it's not good enough. That he needs to utilize "cheat" tools to get the pieces really good.
π: 0 β©: 1
Shigin In reply to Shigin [2010-09-12 23:40:28 +0000 UTC]
...Besides, like I said, it's very subjective, anyways. Digital art will give things a cleaner look, but who says that's what everyone wants? I love pixel art, for instance. Which is digital, yes, but that's irrelevant at the moment. I find beauty in its limitation.

doubledemigod In reply to StevenSanchez [2008-06-23 22:01:05 +0000 UTC]
i think they are talking about CG beating traditional and whats the point of even doin traditional if you can CG.
I think traditional is brilliant and that it teaches you not to make as many mistakes. Also computer fixing is a last resort anyway.
Sorry didn't mean to write an essay

"I am TORSO-MAN!"
Born without arms, legs, or a head (or the 'fun bits' either), Torso-man must rely on his rock hard abs and muscular pecs to deal justice to the foes of order.
Is it any wonder why the face on his chest is 'angry'?
"Torso-man too the rescue!"

I totally agree with buying the "everyday" art supplies. In my opinion, REAL and TRUE artists make the most out of any type of art materials no matter what! Though you may be right with quality of the pencils being not so good as the pricey stuff... but your use of the "average" pencils is wonderful! Giving the most expensive pencils on the market to someone doesn't make them a good artist.
Hope all this came out right...

Andantonius In reply to StevenSanchez [2008-07-11 21:04:41 +0000 UTC]
My guess is less, "professional" supplies are generally more saturated in color, so for realistic work they probably don't work as well, but for comics they're just as good.
And I think more expensive brands blend a little better, too.
