Description Unfinished concept of an atmosphere-processing tower I saw in a dream once. In the dream there were endless cities of these Empire State Building-sized towers with machinery like you see here.

The design and concept of this thing got totally stuck in my head!
I love it.
I keep imagining it with some kind of anchor in zero gravity space above but the machinery hangs down into the atmosphere.
Is that how they work or are they mostly built up from the ground?

Built up from the ground. You can see a better example in my "Mars series" drawings.

Cool! yeah i saw that one.
It's really cool too.
There's just something about the hanging down idea that i really like.

Heh, me too come to think of it. Maybe I'll get around to sketching something of the sort. Expect it to be very '80s retrofuturistic, though... as usual.

Not if I do it first! Just kidding, but seriously let me know if you'd ever like to collaborate on something.
I can totally picture those thing in my world.
You'd keep all credit for the concept of course.
It's just the idea of a whole planet being a giant atmosphere machine is so cool!

Absolutely, because I like your style as well! I'm going to sketch some plans for a mechanical planet, so stay tuned for uploads. You may tackle some of your own versions of it and we can compare and build more from there. They may also become model miniatures and be used in the movie project. I look forward to collaborating.

Cool yeah I kinda picture these massive umbrella shaped weather control stations.
With all the tubes and cylinders hanging down from it like the ones you drew. I guess it would be all rusted and well "weathered" being up in the clouds so long. Like a cross between The Cloud City in Star Wars and the mother ship form Close Encounters.
I'll start on it tomorrow maybe I'll post a WIP so you can see what I mean.

Sure sounds good! Would love to see your concept. I was going to draw mine last night but I ran out of time, so I will do it later today or tonight.
The airborne stations are a great idea, but how will they stay up? I ask because in my universe anti-gravity as seen in Star Wars is still impossible. Everything is still old-fashoned turbo-combustion and rotary-wing for lift and movement.

Another alternate direction I was hoping to add to the conceptual development is the idea of a completely artificial planet. It would have many layers, the upper layer being empty to accomodate an artificially-produced atmosphere, in which the processors hang from the "ceiling", which is hidden by cloud-cover. At the very center of the planet would be a gyroscopic mechanism that producee gravity (I haven't worked out exactly how it does so, perhaps it spins the planet on it's axis?)
We'll work on both concepts and see what works. Is that okay?

Yeah cool!
I have this idea of some kind of gravity mirror substance to keep large heavy ship afloat.[link]
Or I also like the idea of the sky hook or space hook. Where there's a craft in orbit with a long cable hanging down into the atmosphere where that air converter station is.

I love the layered planet idea.
I know if it was hollow and people lived on the inside you could create gravity with centrifugal force. Just by spinning it at the right speed. But I kinda like the top down idea. With an atmosphere level then maybe an agricultural level then a commerce lever and then engineering and lastly the gyro. It would be cool if the levels weren't completely solid too. Where you could see down to other levels. I picture them moving too for some reason.

Funny thing, I had a dream once about a type of "gravity mirror", except it was a portable handheld device about the size of a car tire. If you point it at the sun a certain angle, you can be lifted from the ground. Depending on where you point the mirror at the sun, you can also change directions and gain speed.
I remember it was a blast to use, until the sun started going down.

That aside, it's not a bad idea. Still raises questions on how it works, like anti-gravity, but isn't most sci-fi like that anyway?
The space hook is great too, and I think more realistic.

By the way, I finished with the layered planet concept and am about to upload. Of course you can see to the other levels, because I gave it an unfinnished look which I *really* enjoy for some reason. You see, it takes about eight years to construct these artificial worlds (so far only two exist). The problem is that it's more expensive than terraforming another planet. The Weyland-Yutani corporation pulled the funding from these planetoids as a result, so construction was never finished. Only about half of these little worlds are able to sustain life, so the max population is only about 400 people. Unfortunately they are no longer colonial complexes and serve as re-supply spaceports instead, with populations of only 30 people, mostly workers.
As far as scale, they are about a quarter the size of the Earth's moon.

All the above I didn't make up on the spot, I actually wrote this in the script for my new film. Yes, finally I'm getting a solid script ready.
I'm still open for alternate concepts, though, so I guess calling "solid" would be a bit premature.

I just have a pseudo scientific explanation for the gravity mirror.
Light and gravity are two forces in the universe.
If light can be reflected why not gravity?
I know a scientist could probably give me a thousand reasons why not,
but it seems like people would buy it if it was just a passing line in a movie or something.
I like your sun based one too. And the fact that it's adjustable.

Man I so wanna be part of the crew of an artificial planet.
I love the concept. I can imagine wondering the vast open spaces, making my rounds.
checking on whatever machines I'm responsible for.
I can imagine it has it's own wind and rain patterns.
The space too! I mean space travel as it is now consists of some people crammed into a metal box with tiny windows. Imagine if you could actually get lost on your "ship".
It gives me such a Zenned out feeling just thinking about it. Let me know if you have ideas for details. Maybe like hover bikes the crew get around on or a harvester for the farm level.
I'd love to do some sketches.

Will this be in the "alien" movie?

It will be in the Alien movie, but for only 10 minutes or so at the very beginning of the film. That's still enough to gather atmosphere for the environment... establishing shots (plenty of good ones), transitional shots (showing the organic side, then following a character as he/she walks into the mechanical substructures), then a handful of interior shots, and finally an exterior shot as the ship leaves the planetoid.
I'm not even counting the dialogue that takes place, so maybe it last longer than ten minutes.

I'm definately open for anything you want to add... atmosphere, vehicles, structural design... I can't do much of these now since I will be busy with the ship, ship interior, refinery, refinery interior, lifeboat, lifeboat interior, etc.

Welcome to the project.
