The original design was by Ralph McQuarrie back in 1977 for the abanded Star Trek: Phase II which became ST:TMP. Gene Roddenberry himself rejected this design.

True I quite like what they did with the original design.

Agreed. The re-fit was a much more believable design choice.

The design makes sense when you imagine it as being nearly a century after Enterprise, but when you realize these two ships are just a decade apart...
TOS was already the odd one out design wise, this just makes it hurt more...

The Constitution Class was already around in 2255 in-universe, so I'm curious to see what they'll do with it if one of them appears on the show

Agreed! The potential for cameo's of a young Pike or other Enterprise crew (or NX-01 crew) is huge as well!

Read the first Discovery novel, Spock, Pike and the Enterprise make an appearance. Β Towards the end the Enterprise gets a hole punched through her saucer during a battle!
Despite this book, I'm one of those that believe Discovery is set either in the Kelvin Timeline, or another seperate timeline altogether. Β Too many inconsistencies, especially as there's already meant to be a USS Discovery flying around at this point!

EDIT: Decker from the motion picture was a crewmember on Discovery!

According to TOS novels,, Matt Decker commanded two other ships before the USS Constellation, so during the time of Discovery he would have been on his own ship! Β His son, Willard Decker (who appeared in The Motion Picture), was stationed on Starbases and planets, including Delta IV where he met Ilia! Β He was only on ships when transferring from post to post!

Not really feeling the design of the Discovery. And that's before I watched the show.

Have to agree, even great artwork can't make it a good looking ship.

Thanks for your comments! I quite like the ship, however, to each their own tastes I didn't like the 2009 Enterprise, but now it's grown on me. Perhaps it'll be the same for the Discovery with you.

I'm in agreement with Harmonee and Bry. If they'd at least made an effort to make it look more TOS like the Gabriel C Koerner Enterprise redesign, I wouldn't feel so bad about it. But then they couldn't even get a D7 right, so what were the odds of actually making this look "Prime Timeline"? Discovery just looks more to me like a Concorde with a Stargate stuck on top of the nose with a couple of chopsticks attached to the wings. Kinda liked their original model better, even though those graphics were a little on the rubbish side :/
