Description Part of a series of cartoon style studies:

Picture of a wraith.

While trying my hand at a batch of cartoony characters, I created this Wraith.
Whenever I set out to draw something original, I often draw inspiration from my Native roots. I was inspired by the False Face Society masks of the Iroquois when I made this character. Though this is just a cartoon, I always try to give as much character as I can to my work, no matter how trivial it may seem.

There is a story I read of an original false face, a supernatural being that was punished by the great spirit for his boastfulness, and was condemned to spend eternity healing the sick.

While reflecting on images of the masks, It seemed fitting to me to give a mask to a wraith. Many descriptions of wraiths are about an apparition of a living person that appears to that person to foreshadow thier future.

I highly recommend learning more about the False Face Society if you have the time. Fascinating reading.

I think that the style you did this in is great
and the insight you give on backround puts (some) other people's drawings to shame just for the fact that it is related to something real and not just random thought pouring out on the page.

great job!

Very strong design here. Nice ink work as well. Is that brush? Pen? Or digital line art?

Thanks for the compliment.

I drew a loose sketch about 2x3 inches in mechanical pencil, blew it up on a printer to 11x17, inked it with India ink and a sable brush, and then scanned it in and did a quick color pass in Photoshop.

When I was a kid I was involved in a dumb prank that went wrong and all of the flexors in my right hand were severed. For years I could not use my right hand, but in time it came back. Now I only use brush or pencil for my roughs, since the wacom is too slick for me to feel it because of the nerve damage. Coloring however is much easier for me for some reason, and that is usually done with a tablet. Ironically, though it is extremely difficult for me to hold my right hand out steady, my work tends to usually look very clean and fluid. I think that's because when I hold a brush in my hand I gun it and just move quickly, which usually results in clean fluid strokes.

So there you go, now you know.
