The eggs tend to grow to full size once they're laid. When the mother first passes them the shell is still a little soft (more like cartilage than a shell) before fully hardening after a few hours. Then, hatching can occur anywhere from a few weeks to a few months later.

You know, I've heard of some bird species that lay their eggs in other birds nests. Their chicks either just mooch off the nest's mother or they go as far as to push the competing eggs out of the nest. Birds can't tell the difference between their babies and others so it's very effective. What do you think of this little attribute?
