If I had a nickel for every time I heard one of these excuses...I would be rich enough to buy deviantART and hire new admins.

In my opinon, its ok to trace - but only if: 1 You are learning and NEVER SHOW THE TRACED PIC TO ANYONE! 2 You are tracing your own work. I learned alot by tracing at first, and I see bases as a way to see if an idea works. But that's just me. Kudos anyway.

Thank you very much. I make bases of most of my original work so people can enjoy them. Most of all if they have no scanner or tablet. I've been there. Not fun.

Tracing is legal under the most circumstances and dA has professional lawyers who clearly investigated the issue. They found that it's okay to do it as long as:
1. It belongs only in the Fanart category.
2. Proper credit is given to the original artist. This includes permission and linking back to the original artwork.
3. No profit is ever made out of traced imagery at all.
4. The artist who traced the drawing has no intention to claim the image as their own. Otherwise, it's considered art theft and misrepresentation.
5. The original artist doesn't object towards the said deviant who traced the image. The original artist has every right to report it to the admins if they object and have it removed.
Many professional artists do not like people who trace their art as it is considered an insult to them if it's reused elsewhere.
Please DO NOT brand deviants who trace drawings as copiers in their entirety. Copying art in its entirety can be seen as theft and misrepresentation.

seriously, why don't you just read the FAQs?

true. but most people don't follow the proper rules. then, of course, it would be theft.

I think that if people can't draw, then they need to draw more, and get better. Take classes for god's sake!

So what? Tracing is theft -- theft is against the rules -- doing something against the rules can get you banned.

I feel terrible because in middle school i didnt know anything about the internet and my friend taught me how to trace in paint... did it for a year and hated it. Eventually learned about the internet and swore to never trace again. Now im a Junior in high school and amazing at drawing without tracing while my friend still continues to trace.....

Admit-tingly I've remembered back in elementary school I used to trace for a little bit when I got frustrated with doing the "How to Draw...[this]" books where you would draw simple shapes like ovals and circles first before getting to the final product. Tracing got boring pretty quick because it didn't let me exercise my own creativity even if I had colored a character differently or changed certain parts. Luckily, the whole tracing attempts died out pretty quick as I was growing up.
Its never right or logical to say that something you've traced can be called your own work when it has been directly based on an existing work.
Something that tends to annoy me is when someone on dA actually gives praise over a traced image. There is nothing challenging or difficult about tracing (unless someone has terrible motor skills but still...) because the line art is already there for you and replication of lines (if done by someone who has no problem with hand motor skills) is usually an effortless task. You're mostly focus on keeping your lines steady but in the end the final product technically doesn't belong to you. Tracing isn't creation; its a form of duplication of an existing image. However inking over your own work is a more acceptable form of tracing. Tracing can be used as a learning tool but not the most effective one.

Yes, I agree with everything, especially the end. As for me, I never draw my finished pieces over my sketches. I always trace them for two reasons:
1. If I make a mistake on the finished version, I can still restart from the sketch without redoing the entire thing.
2. I erase so much the sketch paper is always screwed up in the end. It's impossible to do a clean drawing on it.
But still, the sketches were mine, and they weren't traced from the original pictures. To me, it's valid.
