You again? Looks like it’s time for me to return the favor…

The brave Rohirrim horse, Brego walks on the sandy bank of a river, interested in something he has found…

If you have ever seen “Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers”, you know exactly what scene this is! XD I LOVE this horse so much, although I cannot tell you exactly why or I will spoil some of the plot… He’s just the sweetest, best, and most amazing horse in movie history (and also the most underrated)! Usually, horse lovers who are also Lord of the Rings fans geek over how awesome Shadowfax is and while I do love Shadowfax too, Brego totally deserves recognition as well!

I honestly had a LOT of fun with this! I’m pretty happy with this as a first piece of 2022! The pose was a hard one to draw, but I think it came out pretty good! I plan to experiment more with poses and lighting this year. I was debating as to whether or not to do this in my realistic style or in semi-realistic, so it wound up being a blend of both because horses with eyebrows are my trademark. They’re also hilarious to look at. XD

I think the biggest challenge of this whole piece was capturing the coat shading in a bay like Brego and staying true to his markings. I’m still not quite satisfied with how I paint lighting, but I think I am improving, especially with this piece. I tried to recreate this scene as well as I possibly could, but you really only see Brego’s legs and his head in this shot, so I improvised. XD After an hour of scouring every end of Google Images, I found a few really nice references for a sandy river bank and I painted in a few trees for realism. And by a few trees I mean a flipping forest. XD I really love the tiny details I threw in there for fun like the messy hoofprints in the sand, the sand grains falling from Brego’s raised hoof, and the sunlight shimmering off the waves. This was also the first time I drew a halter, so I’m pretty happy with it. He was originally going to have a lead rope as well, but it was way too much work for me this week and I realized there’s a continuity error in this scene. Brego doesn’t have a lead in this shot, but a few shots later, he has one. XD But lead or not, I really enjoyed working on this piece!

I’m also considering making this a series! Horses On the Screen – featuring horses from famous movies and TV shows! What do you guys think?   If you have any suggestions as to what horse I should do next, let me know in the comments! Much like our friend Brego, the horse doesn’t have to be the film’s focus. And contrary to what I said in a status update earlier, it can be any type of movie, not just live-action.

Fun facts about Brego:

~ There is no mention of a horse named Brego in any of J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings books. His appearance is only in Peter Jackson’s film adaptations of “Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” and “Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”.

~ He was originally the battle steed of King Théoden of Rohan’s son, Théodred.

~ Brego was played by a horse named Uraeus. Viggo Mortensen (who played the role of Aragorn) developed a strong bond with Uraeus and eventually purchased him after the movies’ production wrapped. In 2015, Uraeus passed away at age 28, still owned by Mortensen.
