It’s so hard to believe I’ve been drawing horses for about five years now! Here’s an old work from 2020 to celebrate!

Yes, these boys have been my Star Stable Online OCs since late 2019! Kayvar has always been a “big brother” figure to Talin. Most of their relationship is Talin pulling some mischievous prank and Kayvar kindly dealing with it. XD They were originally written as Jorvik Wild Horses in the Star Stable world, but SSO updated the lore so that Jorvik Wild Horses were something different and Magic horses took their place. I’ve tried to amend my lore as much as I can, but this took me months to do. XD More lore: Talin has trouble controlling when he changes between magic and disguised form, so he is most often seen in his disguised form. I’m still working on writing stories with them, but I can’t decide on Talin’s backstory and his backstory impacts Kayvar’s, so… XD

Anyways, let’s talk about this piece (watch me hyper analyze this because it’s older XD). I doodled many scenes like this between them which eventually led to this piece. This entire piece was done without references (apparently I didn’t believe in them back then XD) and mostly with colored pencils. Talin’s anatomy and neck haunt me to this day. XDDD AND KAYVAR’S FACE! He’s supposed to be a Clydesdale type! XD The base was a sketch/lineart thing that I inked out before coloring. Again, since I don’t plan my works ahead of time, the shading didn’t work out as I had wanted it to. A for effort though LOL. Kayvar’s coat was much darker than I had a colored pencil for, but I made do and had to use small amounts of black for his coat shading LOL. I was trying to recreate the rolling hills of the Everwind Fields at night, but again, I was doing this from memory. XD I colored the sky using (I think) about four shades of blue before finally moving on to the last details. The stars were done with this really cool gel pen I have, but my OCD got the better of me and the stars are in some sort of geometric pattern. XD The bright star and the moon were done by drawing a relative shape, smudging it with my finger, repeating multiple times until I was happy, then drawing in the shape one last time. Not a bad work for the time! Even if the anatomy is really cringeworthy. XD

It's also hard to believe I did this 4 months before the pandemic. Yes, being trapped in my house for well over a year taught me how to draw horses. XD (And to use references!! They are your friend, everyone!) So yeah, I hope you all enjoyed this trot down memory lane! One of these days I’ll get the courage to laugh at myself and post one of my first horse sketches. XD
