This article was great! Maybe not for Pokemon specifically, but I'd love to play a monster-battler game with these mechanics... love the monster designs, too! The only thing I think I'd miss out on would be multiple types; I think that adds a lot to the Pokemon experience. Maybe that's just me though.

Really digging the structured approach, rather than the sort of crazy, haphazard elements the Pokemon company throws down. 'dragon' type? 'fighting' type? 'flying' rather than air or wind? what were they smoking?? (grass, probably.)

I think it adds a lot too but looking at it it sometimes feel like a bunch of stuff hap hazardly layered ontop of each other. I think that has sort of become the "Pokemon style" but if they had started with more of a plan and layered things ontop of that solid base, like a MTG or a lot of board game design it could be even better than it is now. With of course is not to say the games aren't hella fun regardless

So basically this is the greatest idea for a series like Pokemon I've heard in a long time, and either he needs to get his hands on the series and redo it OR just start his own series, at least a card game if not more using the principals he lined out with this

Indeed, he def has a firm grasp of game mechanics and some great ideas towards balancing the complexity with a simplicity that is great for making a game playable for a wide range of skill levels. If you didn't, make sure to head over to the article and let him know how much you liked his take on it

I was wondering if I could maybe use the pictures you drew for him to make some sort of trial cards to test out a way to use his concepts if I gave you credit for the art? (I'd also link the article)

I'll let you know when I have them done, and if they work maybe you could even draw more and who knows we could start something with this
