Jessica lost track of time as she sat on the bench and stared at the wall in front of her. She settled into an uneasy equilibrium in her mental and emotional state: as long as she stayed still and kept her mind as blank as possible, she was able to stave off a full-blown panic attack.

She was startled by a knock at the door and reflexively tried to turn her head, but found that she could only move it a few millimeters before pressing against the padding and fiberglass around her chin.

"Come in!"

A woman in white scrubs opened the door and walked in, and she initially looked shocked to see Jessica. The woman quickly regained her composure and said, with a caring professional tone, "Hi, Jessica? I'm here to check your cast and make sure everything is okay."

"Nothing is okay!"

"I understand, I'm sorry. I mean with your circulation and things like that. Can you wiggle your fingers for me?" ... "Good, any numbness in your hands or fingers?"

"If I say yes, will you take this off?"

"I'm sorry, we can't, unless it's cutting off your circulation and-"

"I know, just wishful thinking."

The woman reached for Jessica's right hand. "Okay, I'm going to squeeze your fingers, tell me if this hurts."

"No, that feels fine."

"Okay, now for the left." As the woman squeezed the fingers of Jessica's left hand, she knocked on the cast on Jessica's forearm, then shoulder.

"That doesn't hurt either."

"Okay then, it looks like your cast has fully set. Dr. Thomas wanted to see you again, so I'll take you back to her. Let's get you into this wheelchair."

Purple it is! I wasn't sure what to expect out of the poll, but I definitely agree that a solid color fits best with how I described the application of Jessica's cast.
