Marta's initial reaction to her cast was overwhelming terror, but this faded quickly as she settled in to "life" as an inanimate object. Acceptance of her situation was not easy, but she had no choice: it was useless to struggle or fight against her cast, and every attempt to communicate with the nurses had failed, except for Marta's answers to simple yes-or-no questions.

She started to lose track of time as the days and weeks went by -- even the boundaries between "awake" and "asleep" started to blur. Occasionally the nurses would read to her or play an audiobook that she could barely hear through her cast, and trips outside were nice overall (despite the sun and heat), but Marta spent most of her time staring at the ceiling. She felt like she was losing track of her self, and wiggling her fingers was all that reminded her of the person underneath the purple fiberglass.

"Good morning, Patricia!"

😒 "mmmph." Marta had long since given up on trying to correct the nurses when they called her by the wrong name. Sometimes she wondered if there really was a Patricia, who had actually wanted to be placed in this cast to help with a severe case of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

"It's hard to believe it's almost been a month! I wanted to let you know that you're due for a cast change tomorrow -- it'll be great to get you washed up and let your skin breathe a bit before we put you in a new cast."

😲 Marta was astonished: she would actually be released from her cast in the next 24 hours! She would finally have a chance to communicate, to say that this was all a horrible case of mistaken identity ... she would be free of the fiberglass prison she'd been confined to for an entire month!

I hadn't intended to do much more with Marta, but an idea randomly occurred to me 😀
