Allison and Melanie's relationship deepened over the next week and a half, with Allison greatly enjoying the extra "care" from her girlfriend. Allison lost track of which day was which, and was surprised when Melanie mentioned that her first cast change was later that week.

"Oh, wow, I ... 😳"

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I just ... I think I kind of forgot this could be removed. I wouldn't mind taking a shower though ... I wonder how much time I'll have before they put the new cast on."

"Probably not much, I assume they'll want to make sure your back doesn't start to bend again 🙂"

"That makes sense ... I might only get a few minutes of freedom, too bad I won't be able to do much with it."

Melanie drove Allison to the clinic, helped her get checked in, and then sat down with her girlfriend in the waiting room.

"So what color were you thinking for your next-"

"Okay! I'll tell Dr. Gippson that we're all done with your x-rays; her last appointment is running a little long so you'll have to wait here until she can get the results and take you home."

Allison and Melanie were floored as they saw a nurse or tech come from their right, pushing a patient in a wheelchair -- and that most of the woman's body was encased in light blue fiberglass. She could move only her hips and her toes: her upper body cast fused her hands to her hips and extended up to cover her mouth and the bridge of her nose, and the casts on her legs fully immobilized her knees and ankles. Melanie was especially drawn to the openings at her her chest; her breasts were covered not by the cast but by a mint green bikini top.

Allison took in the woman's predicament with more trepidation than her girlfriend. She had thought her own cast was extreme, at least before acclimating to her new life of helplessness and dependence, and it hadn't crossed her mind that her ability to speak or walk could also be taken away.
