Melanie and Allison spent more and more time together over the following week. Melanie gradually stopped asking for Allison's input about everyday things: what to wear, what and when to eat, what they should do together that would respect Allison's limitations (going for a walk, seeing a movie, going to a museum), and so on. Since Allison needed help to eat and to get dressed, it felt perfectly natural to let Melanie take control of even more.

Allison barely noticed how long it had been since she made a significant decision for herself; she was happy deferring to Melanie's judgment. It somehow felt like her life made sense for the first time. She caught herself fantasizing about Melanie more and more -- wondering what Melanie's skin felt like, wishing she could feel Melanie's embrace when she greeted Allison with a hug, fighting against her cast in frustration while watching Melanie change clothes. Allison found it extremely difficult and awkward to initiate anything due to her cast; she couldn't even move her head into position if she tried to lean in for a kiss.

Allison curled up on the couch with Melanie as they watched a cooking show, and Melanie draped a blanket over Allison's lower body.

"So tell me again, what it was like when they put you in this."

"I guess I wasn't too surprised when Dr. Phillips said she was 'upgrading' my brace to a cast; my back was hurting more and more ... they got me into the traction frame, started to put the first layers of this on, then ..."

"You found out they were going to include your arms like this?"

"Yeah, I begged for them not to, but they said I didn't have a choice."

"You didn't try to stop them?"

"I- ... no, I was already strapped into the traction frame, then they started with the fiberglass ..."

Melanie kept a few additional questions to herself. "You didn't fight?" "You didn't try to run away before they imprisoned you in this?" "You just let them take away your arms for months?"

"Good girl," she thought.

Allison twitched suddenly, and let out a soft, quick mmm sound. Her breathing became deeper and more rhythmic, and Melanie realized that Allison had fallen asleep on her lap.
