Description
Taken on the border to east van and "regular" vancouver as some would say.. honestly, i felt equally at ease walking both sides of the city..when i was walking by this lady, she was picking up change that the guy frame left had thrown on the ground for her.. she was taking her time.. when i walked by her i realized she was crying..

and thank you for the great comment..
i completely agree with you.. while some people are genuine assholes, there was a nice lady that stopped to check if the lady in another of my pics was still breathing.. infact 3 random people had stopped.. it was sad.. they wouldnt have all stopped if she was conscious

Yeah I was reading that too. That shot was sad. :/
You see it here in Portland every day, but it's so striking to see it in your photos. Really hits home, y'know?
You take beautiful photographs.

Wow, it is a good shot, but I have to say that Estudio has some great advise, I was using my hands as a quick crop actually, before I read any comments (according to my prof its a good idea so I am trying it alot now), and this deviant suggested the same cropping I liked best...Its got a good sense of direction too, the perspective helps to lead the eye from the girl to the man top-left, and great contrast too, the BG so light and the subjects so dark clearly define the subject matter. Its some good stuff here!

Beautiful capture full of emotion
Was she crying from happiness?
Or because he 'threw money' at her?

straightfromcamera In reply to phreakyevil [2006-09-29 14:51:14 +0000 UTC]
i would imagine not because of happiness.. probably the fact she was in a position she needed to pick up the small change..

too much empty spaces. cropping is advisable so we could focus on the main subjects: the guy on the left frame, and the girl picking up the coins and crying, which seemed obvious enough even without your explanations -- which is actually quite good! but yeah, too much empty spaces bottom and top right of the frame... coz the first thing i see isn't the actual 'story-line' in this piece, but rather that small sterofoam cup on the window on the upper right frame of the shot...
i'd proly find cropping away the signboard up to proly a 1/4 of the shopping cart would do the trick. the signboard does tend to feel icky after awhile coz i see marvelous shadow-play here, which added more to the artistic values of this piece, which happens to be more photojournalism rather than urban street.

i take in too much at once and sometimes overlook simplicity.. i was going for the shopping cart as an extention of her, but its not.. i gree with the wasted space.. but in someways i still liked it..
case in point in overlooking stuff.. that cup.. i just noticed.. its not good when someone can point something out in your picture that you didnt notice..
another lesson i will be vigilant in.. observing..

evanhwong In reply to straightfromcamera [2006-09-28 08:28:47 +0000 UTC]
yes, the shopping card is an extension of her, hense i thought would be best to still include parts of it if u still wish to do the crop... which the end result i see is somewhat better coz it removes all the annoying clutters and makes us focus more on the actual subjects herein.

It makes me feel bad that unlike everyone else I don't feel a lot in my heart when I see these pictures. But maybe it's because I see the real thing so often pictures no longer speak to me, only the real thing does. I think it would be good if people stopped letting their hearts get clenched up and started doing something to help these people so they wouldn't be degraded by assholes like the jerk who threw the money on the ground. *shrugs* Just a thought. It just is one of those things that make me angry. The images bother people, but when they are faced with a homeless person in the street they do nothing to help them. I'm not saying I'm one to talk, as I too can't always afford to give them money, or are skeptical of what they will use it for. But maybe if people bought them more food, or more warm clothes or blankets, then this sort of thing wouldn't happen so much. I dunno. The people of the city deffinatly don't always have good hearts.

Dammit Fox. You take such powerful pictures. Everytime I see one of your pictures of these unfortunate people my heart clenches up.
I think these pictures show the true beauty that is to be found in this city. Its not just the mountains or the trees or whathaveyou...its the people.
So many others see these people as they see the trash that surrounds them. But you and your camera always manage to find beauty.
I would love to accompany you on one of your trips to Vancouver to get a chance to see the things as you see them. I really would.

The timing is nice to get her hair like that, and her pose works with the title. I also think it's great that you got the man who threw the change in the frame.

i like that his foot is raised as to bid adieu to the woman he will never see again, or perhaps not remember her when he sees her next.. while not a perfect photo grain wise, i still love the look of her hair..
the "touched by an angel filter" i call it, a the bright light of truth and purity touch especially those who need it most

His entire pose is beautiful. His hands down at his side and his arms not crossed. That's the classic way to accept good energy. And in truth, it's the pose we all go into after our Karma has been raised. He only gave that change to make himself feel good. His pose really shows it. He's also above her in the frame, just like the proverbial angel. It's symbolic, more than anything. Whether or not you intended it to be.

straightfromcamera In reply to fallinginsane [2006-09-26 23:51:21 +0000 UTC]
infact the dropped change reflected more upon a need not for karma to be raised.. but a selfish act is rather what i percieved.. when i make the decision to give someone money, i hand it to them.. i dont simply drop it..
his pose does look like that of which you described, but i think it might just be the oposite..

It's ironic. The conscious act of raising karma denounces the sentiment of it. I love that idea, and it's shown really well.
