Description
Or should I say three views? The alternate title I thought of for this piece is "Starry Eyes"This is my entry for the monthly challenge - Owls. These owls serve as a window to their homes; a lakeside forest, deep green woods, and tall branches silhouetted against the full moon. In addition to the scenes and their colors, I wanted to give each owl their own unique shape. The blue lake owl is based on a fish owl, the little green one with the harvest moon is a Eastern screech owl, and the violet one with the large moon is a sooty owl. All three carry the stars in their eyes and the moon as their heart.
Materials: pigment liners, watercolors, masking fluid, acrylics, Photoshop elements

So cute! I love how it's so different yet still works so well together. Also, nice job on the inner scenery

Thanks Glider I painted each owl on a different day so they would have their own individual feel (and be completely dry when I was working on the next one).

I love how much thought you put into this, and your description is equally as lovely. Very nice concept!
Also, I appreciate that you've drawn the owls with correct toe placement, haha. Just a pet peeve of mine when I see art / statues / etc of owls with feet looking more like eagles or songbirds!

Aw, thank you!Β Β I was very excited for the idea as soon as the owl theme was announced, but it sat around in my head for a while before I finally decided to sketch things out and run with it.Β
Owls can rotate their fourth toe to face forward, but I think I've only seen this in photographs of an owl in flight diving for prey, not perched. Though you're right, I have seen plenty of art depicting them with three toes forward Β Β Owl toes are pretty easy for me to remember because I mostly draw parakeets and other psittacines with zygodactyl feet.

Yes, their third forward facing toe is opposable, and they almost always perch and clutch prey with it turned to the back. This allows them to have a very tight grip! Strange that this characteristic goes unnoticed by so many people.
Anyway, you're welcome. : )

Gorgeous! There's so much to look at from the patterns in the feathers to the eyes and the designs on their chests. The one on the far right has very hypnotic eyes ^^

Thanks so much! I hope her eyes aren't too creepy. I was worried about the lack of visible iris, but Tyto eyes are often like that, so I went for it anyway

Wow, this looks amazing! Β Β I love how mystical it looks, and i also love how Β they are themed after what habitats they live in. That is a very creative idea. ^^
I hope you win the contest!
