Niiice.
Did you use the Glow post-effect thing to get the nice haziness around the lights in the city?

Mmm... Map is stretching a bit on the building. UV mapping's a bitch, innit? I still think there must be a better way. Try doing a search on google for "pelt mapping. " Looks like a quick new way to UV map something.

Nope, pelt mapping is what I meant. Pelt, as in animal pelt. Other packages might call it something else, but MAX calls it pelt mapping. Its almost like automatic unwrapping, with some great relax tools thrown in to ensure that the mesh is nice, flat and ready to be painted on.
Yeah, procedurals are great, no need for any UV unwrapping! God I hate unwrapping. I almost hate it as much as I hate waiting for physics simulations. Automatic is the way to go! I hate layering procedurals, though... Stuff tends to slow down a lot when I do that.

mean belt mapping?
and yeh. it's a pain. but then all those textures are procedural, so nothing is mapped. all in the shader.
i have loads of different falloff bands set to do things like only expose the lights on polies which are near vertical, only put struts on edges. all automatic.
of course i spent a whole night making it all automatic... that's the bitch about automation.

Wow! Gigantic! Very nice! Only the fog is a little undetailed! Good render though!

I am greatly impressed with your mesh work, in this image and others in your gallery. Do you have experience with other modeling programs, such as Lightwave? And would you consider Cinema 4D superior?

i dont have any experience of lightwave although i am trying to learn MAX - i kinda grew up on cinema 4d cos it's a really creative program which makes a lot of sense to a mac user. i like the shaders and i like bodypaint, and it feels more as if it was rogrammed by artists not coders.
i wouldn't consider it superior for poly work, although it has a fairly complete toolset and i've yet to fully discover v9 (which rips alot from max) cos the depth of features in max is just ridiculous - and c4d's export options are a bit limited. also up until v8 the character animation was virtually useless.
but the renderer is just dirty fast even with complex scenes, it's lighting is simple and it has great realtime display features. even if i do learn max, i don't think i'll be retiring 4d.

Thanks for the insight! Your meshes are incredible, I was curious if it were due to mere imagination or a better modeling package / experience than I have...
