Since he's an enemy in the New Super Mario Bros U that's probably why he can't be harmed, but in the original he is said to steal Toad's stuff like his mushrooms, in that case Nabbit can still collect mushrooms but gets points for them rather than powering up

I get how it logically makes sense, but why Nabbit, of all things? They could've put Toad the Mushroom Retainer in (that's the red one), or a Purple Toad if they really wanted a purple character.
