Description Yes, it is for real now

The parts I ordered for my LEGO Amaterasu model arrived last week and I put the wolf together. Just in time for exhibiting in our county fair, too (It felt odd bringing a shoebox to the fairgrounds and having to assemble Ammy's sections together on-site.)

Good thing I included plenty of spare parts with my order, I had to put the model through several tweaks and revisions even within the past few days. Longer leg proportions, reinforcements for the (quite fragile) hinges that connect the segments together . . . at 24oz. (over one pound!) Ammy is actually quite dense for a LEGO model and that weight makes it difficult for her to to pose without falling over.

There's a good long list of tasks I want to accomplish for next year's version, but naturally I'll deal with that after the Fair.

EDIT: Also check out Ammy's Smaller version , also built from LEGO blocks, just as much cuteness packed into half the size!

that's really good. I've awlays had trouble doing animal models, probably because I try to add alot of plates to the sides.

Designing took over a month, on and off. Building took just over an hour.

I found this just today on Okami World, where I recently signed up to post my Ōkami inspired LEGO modelings. Here's the thread: [link]

Did you use LDD to design this, or did you order from Bricklink? Regardless, the scale and level of detail are both very impressive. You have inspired me to post my Ōkami LEGO model here on DeviantArt - it will be up soon!

PS: I could've sworn I uploaded this to Lego.com, but I can't find it. Oh well, that's a bummer.

Mister-oo7 In reply to Stratadrake [2010-08-19 21:33:06 +0000 UTC]

Ah, shame. It seems you are using many small plates on the body, yes? Using larger curved slopes with a frame of technic keeps things light and sturdy. Some of the best work on this scale I've seen has been done by the legendary Arvo Brothers, ex: hit "Up" for more

Naturally, LDD is limited by the variety of available elements, but that's where Bricklink is helpful. In addition to its wide selection and better prices, Bricklink also has the ability to create multiple "wanted lists" that can be used to keep [selectively filtered] collections of pieces which you can order at any time.

Also, where abouts is local? I recently spent four days at a fair in Virginia dedicated exclusively to Lego where I exhibited my Origin Mirror among other things. Most visitors were not familiar with the game, but it was great fun talking to the few who were well acquainted. I wonder - did you have any similar experiences?

Stratadrake In reply to Mister-oo7 [2010-08-20 07:20:07 +0000 UTC]

It is definitely a shame that LDD doesn't offer much in the way of Technic bricks. As for "local", I live out in Tillamook, Oregon, and we have a four-day County Fair each August. Local exhibits (art/crafts, floral, etc.) are a case of you make it, then enter it in for exhibition, they are judged against the other exhibits, and ... that's it. It sits there for the four days for everyone else to see. It is not like a convention where you actually man the booth and talk to people as they walk by.

Mister-oo7 In reply to Stratadrake [2010-08-20 15:08:00 +0000 UTC]

Ah, ok, the variety sounds great - I imagine the competition is tough, though I would enjoy looking for the best of other people's crafts for rendering in Lego! For the convention experience, I guess you'd need BrickFest in Portland, March 2011.

Additionally, our Fair rules allow Lego exhibits for courtesy only -- they are not judged or given premiums/awards like everything else, mostly due to complaints of the judges not being able to tell boxed models apart from original creations.

Stratadrake In reply to Mister-oo7 [2010-08-19 02:16:46 +0000 UTC]

I designed the model in LDD. I should have the model file uploaded to Lego.com somewhere, search by "Stratadrake" and you should be able to find it.

I actually started tinkering around with a "life-size" scale (with Issun as a standard minifig), but quickly realized that it would take waaaay too long to design, much less build.

I did fail to factor in the support for her weight (24oz is a lot of weight for a Lego model this size); my attempts at articulation (and being unable to order ball joints at the time) mean that she's actually as fragile to pose as she is awesome to look at.

Amaterasu totals out at about 800 pieces, but since it's a copyrighted character you can't just upload the model & order it However you can still order the bricks individually, but assembling the list of parts and actually ordering them takes forever (took me about five hours!) and it comprises over 100 different types of bricks, something that should be optimized down later.

It was a good thing that I actually requested two orders, because turns out I needed the extra parts to strengthen her legs so she could stand up for 4 days at the local County Fair.

Have you seen my smaller version Ammy yet?

Stratadrake In reply to YellowTorterra [2010-04-30 03:39:31 +0000 UTC]

Only kinda sorta... I planned the thing on Lego's digital designer, so I do have a save file for the design. However I had to give it a number of modifications (especially the legs!) before I could exhibit it, so the saved file doesn't entirely match up with what you see here.

browsing under LEGO, mind in half awake mode... and then i saw this.

I've been a fan of LEGOs since i was 4/5, and a fan of Okami since last year, and this is quite amazing! the level of detail, especially on Snarling Beast, and all of it, *even the annoying Issun* came out so awesomely!

fav'd
