HellRiden - 505/760 HPSHORT STORY by AthenaCykes
“Reina, what are you doing up there, do you think you’re a goat?” Margaret yelled up to the tokota who looked absolutely tiny in the distance as she made her way up the nearly sheer cliff wall. A little way beneath her, licking her paws happily as she sat on a neat little outcrop of rock, was Little Dipper. They’d had lunch earlier, and the silly girl had lost her balance and fallen right into the stew that Margaret had been cooking over the fire. She hadn’t spilled it all, but her paws were likely rather beef and carrot flavored right now, so she was trying to lick it all up. Maverick sat near the cliff’s base, Barking loudly at Sage. Sage had managed, got knows how, to climb up a nearly sheer pillar of rock when Margaret was paying attention, and now sat on it proudly as though she was a king of some kind. Maverick wanted her to come down and play with him, but she was wholly uninterested as she sat atop her pillar of a throne and looked down at her five subjects, the only one who was giving her the time of day seemed to be Maverick, though, so she contented herself in barking back at him, teasing him with the fact that she was all the way up at the top of the ridiculous, rain washed pilliar, and there was nothing he could do about it. While everyone played around, enjoying the cliff at the top of the mountain they’d spent hours trying to climb, Killian’s mind was elsewhere. Even Margaret seemed to have forgotten what they’d come up here for, but she hadn’t. A bear, or something like it, had mauled and killed a couple of teenage campers who’d made the climb, and the ones who had gotten away had simply run and run and run down the mountain, without a chance to grab anything. The families of the killed campers had paid Margaret and this group to go up the hill and retrieve their bodies and belongings before that bear, or anything else that lived up on the hill, found it. It was a rather depressing mission that they were on today, and Killian could understand the want to put it out of their heads. But still, they had made a deal, and it had taken them all day to climb so it’d take them a full day to climb back down, and she was eager to get that started as soon as possible. It didn’t seem like anyone else shared her sense or urgency, though, judging from the agitated barking coming from Maverick up at Sage on her ridiculous perch, little dipper licking her paws like a human child with no manners would lick a plate or a bowl that had once held ice cream, and Reina seemingly asleep up on that outcrop as Margaret yelled up to her. The tokota sighed as she ran up to where Sage sat proudly, and demandingly barked for her to come down. How had she even gotten up there? She couldn’t help but wonder. Maverick, delighted to see an ally, barked along with her, and the two were rather loud together- loud enough, along with Margaret’s calling to her, to snap Reina out of her dangerously perched slumber, much to the handler’s thanks, and get her to slowly start her goat like descent, with her claws digging deep into the soft soap stone that lined this edge of the cliff. As she stepped past Little Dipper on out cropping of rock where she sat, the seal girl looked up at Reina curiously and began to follow her back down, trying her best to maintain her balance on the way down. As the others all began to converge, Sage noticed she was the only one left still on the top of a rock instead of at the base of the path with the group, and sighed. All eyes, curious as ever, were on her, wanting to see how she’d get down from this ridiculous spot she’d gotten herself on to. Her eyes burnt with a determined fire as she lept from her pillar, her legs pushing off against the last bit of the edge with all of her might, hoping that she could make the jump. As she flew through the air, she landed on the out cropping of rock that Reina has been sleeping on, and slowly made her way down to where Little Dipper had been, then to where Maverick had been yelling at her before she ran past Margaret to come face to face with Killian. She had a toothy grin on her face as all the other tokotas and Margaret, even Killian, looked rather impressed with the display she’d put on getting off of that pilliar, adn it left them all wondering how she’d gotten up it. But Killian had no time for that, and she turned towards the trail, signaling for the others to follow her, and soon, they were on their way up the side of the cliff that was far more climbable to find what they needed to find.
