I love this!
In my head, I think Susan DID have dragon powers at birth, but Chang was her mother and removed her Dragon Chi to strengthen herself, knowing Susan would be raised by Lao Shi and would see her and her views as an enemy.
I also like to think Jake and Haley have a WAY more "muggle-raised" world view than most other dragons because of this, Susan having to "be human". Even if they are dragons, they consider themselves people first. Haley and even Jake worry about muggle school. It's more like the live in the muggle suburbs and commute into the magical city for work. Look how poorly Jakes cousins turned out instead...
Seeing how pathetic Jake's extended family was makes me believe that the "National" Dragons are selected from among a countries best dragons and trained up like a Olympic athlete, like all counties have way more "regular" people, most dragons aren't like Jake/Lao Shi/Sun Park. Fred Nerk was also heavily trained as a "first" dragon, the new location can't fail... Think about a Greggy facing Rose vs Jake or Haley under Sun Parks guidance facing Rose... No contest, it's how the Hunstsclan slayed so many dragons. Lao Shi and Jake ARE way above par.
Also, I'd LOVE to see Jake's extended family's reactions to Jake dating Rose as:
- Rose is as talented as she is beautiful. As in seriously in both categories...
- She's Huntsclan
- Jake is actually able to keep a girlfriend
- Jake doesn't care that she's Huntsclan. (I could see them fearing that about her...)
- Jake and Rose can articulate feelings, his cousins seem to be unable to do that regardless of age

WOW!!! Susan looks awesome as a dragon. Wish they did an episode based on that!
Actually, while I freakin' adored this show, I found rather distracting that so many people knew about Jake's identity. Spud and Trixie, being the main character's best friends, it's common for them to know, but pretty much everybody else knows except for the father. Not really much of a SECRET identity.
But aside from that, this was an AWESOME show!!!

This has been one of my favorite shows since I was a preteen, so I have a ton of love for it and its characters.
Personally, I liked the idea of most of Jake's close friends and family knowing his identity, I think it allowed the show to focus on other plots besides the secret identity bit.

You should check out the pictures I drew of Haley. She is just to die for. I drew her posing as TV movie actress Danielle Harris you should really check them out. Susan does look really cute but my favorite all time is Haley! She is the cutest ever in American dragon along with Cynder from Spyro!

On a related note, there's no lore-related reason for why dragon powers skip a generation, right? If there isn't, I could easily headcanon up that it's a preventative measure in case a dragon goes bad, they can't breed an army and try to conquer those they're supposed to be protecting.
