Description the main characters from "Alpha and Omega," based on their concept art.

I decided to watch "Alpha and Omega 2: A Howl-iday Adventure" since apparently it's the real-deal and not another bogus sequel rumor floating around. I had my issues with the first movie--I try not to compare animated films from lesser-known companies to big-time names like Disney or Dreamworks, everyone has their own way of doing things/telling stories and not all animated films have to be masterpieces or tell the world's next most dramatic story. That said, I thought the first movie was cute--I thought the characters were likeable, though a bit bland; I liked the designs, I know a lot of people had issues with the "anime-hairstyles" but I kept an open mind and it didn't bother me; I didn't have much of a problem with the comedy itself, it was a kid's movie after all, but I thought some of the jokes were awkwardly paced; I will give the movie credit where it's due, though, I thought the soundtrack was really good, it's nothing you'd expect to hear on Broadway or anything, but for the type of light-hearted fluff aura that the movie was portraying the soundtrack could have been a lot lazier, but, honestly, I think the soundtrack was one of the most enjoyable aspects of the film.

All that being said, I bunkered down and watched the sequel, especially after reading a few critic/viewer reviews, which seemed mixed--I don't really pay attention to IMDB rating systems, since what's good to one person may suck to another, but based on a lot of viewer reviews, a lot of people seemed to really like the movie and praise it as a major step-up from the first film. Aaaand after watching the film....yeah, I'm not too impressed.

I hear there's already confirmation for at least a third, and possibly fourth, sequel, so I guess the film is ok in the regard that it seemed really rushed and left a lot open--which also doesn't surprise me, since the movie was only 45 minutes long, isn't that odd? For what the film is, I didn't have too much of a problem with it--the voice cast in entirely different, but I don't think they're bad, sometimes I even forget I wasn't listening to the original cast; the characters seemed pretty much in-character to their first movie personas, but it was a little hard to tell, considering every character seemed to only get snippets of screen-time. The movie, to me, tried to shove a whole bunch of plot points into one movie, allowing for little character build-up and just a jumble of storylines all trying to compete for space in such a short window of time.
I kinda wanted to meet Kate and HUmphrey's pups more; I wanted to see Garth and Lily and their "alternative" lifestyle more; I wanted to see how Kate/Humphrey and Lily/Garth were dealing with being the few, if not the first, alpha and omega couples; even this rogue pack that was introduced--I can kinda gather they had a "Simba's Pride" Zira-esque backstory (felt betrayed by past packmates/allies or strongly disagreed with others' views, etc.)--I didn't really care for them, except for the female (I think her name was Princess) that watched over Runt.

Bottom line, I don't think it's a god-awful sequel, but if you're looking for a step-up from the first movie I don't think you'll find it here. I don't think it's that the story's bad, I actually think the creators had some really good ideas going, but I think they tried to shove too many ideas into one movie--if they focused on the relationships of the characters post alpha-and-omega marriages, great; if they focused on just Kate and Humphrey and having to save one of their pups, great; if they focused on just some rogue pack coming in to take names, great! Oh, and I forgot that all of this is supposed to be around the holidays, which doesn't play into the movie much at all--the fact that it's close to the holidays could have been taken out of the film and nothing would have been lost.

It's cute, but this is a sequel I won't feel compelled to buy on DVD....

ANYWAY! My long rant on the sequel is done (but feel free to give feedback, I'm actually really curious to discuss with movie/why people like it so much already!), so now onto the drawing: after watching the movie, I decided to draw some Kate & Humphrey! I like their CGI designs, but the concept art is just really cool to me, I think a traditional version of A&O would have been a lot of fun, at least from a character design standpoint.
I'm probably going to do more of these in the future, since there's a lot you can play around with in terms of design for these two...and because I think Kate looks a tad too much like a fox for me to just leave this alone....

The first movie was alright, indeed had its good and bad criticism, but the sequels was really a tad far off. Quality and story seemed a bit to the cheap shot for the film - as is a last gasp of breath for the production.

But never the less, the characters them selves were really the focus of attention in my opinion, and a reason for my interest of the film.

I like your interpretation of Humphrey and Kate, It's very fluent and stylistic to the production sketches. Overall, nicely doneΒ

Really good job of a drawing! You're amazingly talented! I read the Discription, I agree with you on the second Alpha and Omega. I have quite a few problems: They changed most of the chararcter's voices, while in the first they really suited them (also, Kate and Lilly were played by the Same person). And the characters don't seem themselves, Kate is really fussy and bossy, and Lilly is confident and smart (etc.). The animation looked weird, and the names of the new characters: King, Princess? Those names are just some pack leaders clichΓ©, and Claudette's an 'okay' name, but Stinky and Runt! Those names are humiliating and gross! And the jokes are so STUPID! Like the one when Humphrey's begging! Honestly, a stupid idea of a sequel! D: Do you think?Β

I just don't get how everyone is calling the sequel an "improvement." Β I'm disappointed in the sequels and the direction they seem to be going (with the now released third movie and the confirmed up-coming forth) because I feel like there was a lot more that could have been done with it. Β Even if it's a kid's film, even if they kept the pups in (the names don't bother me much; I'm not a fan of names like "Stinky" but considering there are characters named "Salty" and "Shakey" then the name isn't too bad in context since it's established names like that exist amongst these characters), there's just no real character building or solid direction--just seems like a bunch of bad jokes tied together by cute (and, unfortunately increasingly bad) animation.

Again, I can't say I hate these films, because I know they're innocent enough, but I hate certain aspects of them (first movie included) and I'm disappointed that they could have been a lot better. Β Honestly, I could probably write a small book on my opinions on the A&O franchise...

I still have yet to see the original movie of this. *makes mental note to do that sometime* While I still know nothing about the plot really, the thing I liked about the concept is that it makes wolves actually the GOOD guys for a change.

But I find that holiday-based sequels are often, I dunno...lacking.Β  They seem to be a 'cash cow' only made to take advantage of the holiday season, and less for good storyline. *shrug*Β  I wish movie makers would stop making holiday sequels simply for the sake of holiday cash-in.

I'd say if you're a fan of cute wolf/dog movies, animation and/or just a nice fluff film to keep you occupied, I'd say check it out--I definitely think some parts/aspects of the film are much better than others, but everyone seems to be very up-and-down about the movie, so of course I'll let you come to your own conclusion. :3

I think that's what originally got me interesting in A&O when I saw the trailer for the first film--there aren't too many movies portraying wolves as the good guys, or too many movies portraying wolves at all, really--there are a lot of films involving dogs, not so much wolves. Β I will admit I thought A&O was going to have a slightly more serious overtone than I expected, but nonetheless I enjoyed it. Β (The bipedal dancing kinda threw me off, though--you'll see what I mean if you see the film; I promise that's not a spoiler!)

Yeah, a lot of times I think sequels are "cash-cows." Β Very rarely do I come across a sequel that I tolerate, much less like--my biggest problems with sequels isn't even their plots--I actually think a lot of sequels have great ideas--but I often hate the way they're executed, and holiday sequels are definitely no exception.

Personal movie opinions...the first one was cute. Not the best movie ever or anything by a long shot, but enjoyable enough to watch; I don't really see the point of all the hate floating around it. I watched A Howl-iday Adventure the other day and yeah...it wasn't too great. I mean, I liked the characters--the pups were cute and all--but the plot was weak (not necessarily in concept, but the way it was handled), I didn't really feel like the story was resolved very well, if at all, and the animation was not very good. Didn't hate it--I'd probably watch it again just for the pups, lol--but overall I wasn't too impressed.

On an art-related note, though, I love how you draw the A&O characters! Such a lovable concept-like style. I daresay I like your versions better than the ones that actually made the screen! XD You should draw a picture of the pups sometime; I'd love to see them in your style!

Stray-Sketches In reply to NattiKay [2013-10-13 04:10:00 +0000 UTC]

I pretty much thought the same thing about the first movie--nothing spectacular, but cute and enjoyable enough that I'd probably watch it a few times.

The biggest problem with the sequel is just that it's all over the place--I was really trying to enjoy the characters, because when I saw them I liked watching them, but every time one character's dilemme even started to get handled the film jumped to another dilemme/character.

& Thank you! :3

Honestly, I was doodling images of the pups as teens/adults before this image; I really like the pups and wish they were fleshed out more--I'm crossing my fingers that in later movies they grow up a little and start showing more of their personalities and appearances--besides color and hairstyles, they kinda looked like cut-outs from the usual A&O pup template, I'd love to see them resembling their parents a little bit more, considering how different Kate and Humphrey look from one another.
