Glad to see not all Germans believed in idea "Russians are not humans and you can treat to them as to cattle"

Actually, I don't think the branches of the SS have like each other that much. For instance the head of the Waffen-SS did not like his men working with the SS branch in charge of the camps.

Ofc he gives him some water, and in the next village he put all the villagers into the chirch and set it on fire, to burn the people alive.
SS is the incarnation of mercy.

War is remembered for it's inhumanity but once in while humanity creeps in. I'm glad to see a reminder of this.

A simple yet moving photo of the humanity that can still exist in warfare, amongst even the most hated enemy.

That goes to show, German soldiers where like any other soldier, they have a heart, something most people don't want to recognized.

well, 500 feet away, they were just a nameless and a faceless enemy but when you're 5 feet away from them and knowing that they also have the same fears and dreams of yours, then you're no different at all to them.

Oh sure, the SS is known for it's kindness with slavs

It was said the Waffen-SS soldiers, as the one on this picture probably is, had a bit less prejudice however, as they faced the soviets in battle instead of shooting at partisans and many were moved more by ideological than racial struggle

well, Scubacat17 was talking about that single SS soldier on that picture and I agreed with her. And it doesn't mean that my general views or maybe her's of the over all actions of the SS in the OST is the total reflection of what was pictured. But there were stories of kindness of both sides during the war.And that's a fact. But there's a fact too of both brutalities and no quarter given and taken of both sides.

haha I know man, that's just my fucked up version of humor!

I read a book called Black Edelweiss, which is a first-hand account of a SS soldier who fought at the 6th SS-Gebirsjäger division at Karelia at the german-Finnish frontline, and he discusses exactly that. They hated communism, and that was why he joined, and they were too worried to fight and stay alive to think about racial struggle, killing jews and everything we use to associate the SS with. And that Waffen-SS stereotype is what made him mad, as he lost several friends who were just common people, and he lost them in battle, not executing ethnic minorities like the divisions who worked at the rear lines.

Luckly he was captured by americans and not russians or he would, no doubt, be executed on sight. But, honestly, I can't blame the russians for that, I would have done the same were I a soviet soldier back then.

I strongly recommend that you read it, I'm sure you'll find it really interesting!

I have that book but it's been on my book shelves unread for more than a year now! haha Before I had this, I was really dying to read this book because of the great review. But once I had it and maybe because I took it for granted, I just put off reading it till tomorrow. This tomorrow became weeks, weeks turn to months and now it's a year! LOL Well, promise (cross my fingers)tomorrow, I will start reading this!
