Description EDIT - I fixed it so it is awesome. MSN doesn't autoreshrink certain ones, and most of them now have that sexy shadow.
NEW PACK. Contains 15 yellow-tastic smilies! Inside the lovely zip file you will find:
OMG Noes Crying
Awkward Blankface Grin Confused
Sad RAEG Nosebleed ISWYDT
Sleeping Blushes BRB Happy

My first real time doing smilies, other than a comic I recently did. A lot of inspiration came from *Mirz123 , who is awesome.

Wow! They look simple yet so cute and awesome! But, are they free to use? Like including in a stamp? credits considered

They aren't for use in a stamp, they're for use in instant messaging programs and the like.

Mhmm, that's why we don't curb the population problem with baby burgers cause people would get all offended like "Wah, you're eating an adorable baby" and then the person who just be "it's called veal, you silly activist"

But, yeah.

Yay! Smilies! I love your yellow shading! Great job! My favorite is the sleeping one.

Mine too. I love the sleeping one, just cause it's adorable.

Also, something I realized while working on this was how hard it is to find a for sure definition on the differences between a smiley and an emoticon. Even smileypedia wasn't helpful.

Mirz123 In reply to stuck-in-suburbia [2010-11-17 20:40:37 +0000 UTC]

The biggest thing I have heard is that smileys have defined hands. Meaning fingers. Though, I have had round hands on some of my smilies--but I guess technically that was wrong.

To tell you the truth, there really isn't much difference. Back in the day, meaning when the distinction between emotes and smileys first came about, the key difference was that smileys had 4-pixel eyes, while emotes had 2 pixel eyes. That held for quite a while, then more people started doing them and...who knows.

I think the hand thing is still the best indicator. If you look at the work of Koloboks and Fool, they all had fingered hands.

stuck-in-suburbia In reply to Mirz123 [2010-11-17 20:44:16 +0000 UTC]

That is quite possible. I didn't really do any hands, though. Fingers have always messed with me, whether I'm drawing with a pencil, or try to pixel them. They always look wheird. I dunno why.

Mirz123 In reply to stuck-in-suburbia [2010-11-17 20:46:28 +0000 UTC]

Ah, but that's also another smiley distinction. Their hand retract. In many cases, you never see a smiley's hands until they need them. Then they kinda appear, are used, and then disappear again.

stuck-in-suburbia In reply to Mirz123 [2010-11-17 20:57:33 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, that is very true. Soemtimes that a feature on emotes, but usually the hang around, even when not in use. I guess after a certain point it will be hard to make the distinction.

Are the images *.png so that they work with any background...? Or will they be yellow on them all?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

stuck-in-suburbia In reply to Emotikonz [2010-11-17 08:01:26 +0000 UTC]

They're transparent .gif, I think. Does that make it a problem?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Emotikonz In reply to stuck-in-suburbia [2010-11-17 08:49:07 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... well, obviously *.png records the RGB and alpha channels separately, whereas *.gif has a 256 limit with all the channels combined. So PNG supports semi-transparency. I would have figured that if they were static anyway, you'd save them as a PNG so that you can have semi-transparent shadows.
But mostly it's just that the shadows look yellow in hue and most IM clients have a white background. I suppose you could argue it's 'bloom' - light reflection from the yellow smilie, but... still...

stuck-in-suburbia In reply to Emotikonz [2010-11-17 08:52:07 +0000 UTC]

Oh, the shadows are only on the preview image, though. And the background is yellow.

Though the shadows would have been good to include... (totally going to go do that)

Question: how do you get MSN to not shrink statics to 15x15...? I've been making sure all my statics are EXACTLY that for this reason, and most of my emotes are animated if they're bigger - even if it's only a blink.

Is this another feature of PNG....?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

stuck-in-suburbia In reply to Emotikonz [2010-11-17 20:37:00 +0000 UTC]

No, actually. I had issues with that, so I looked up tutorials. I found this one by `Synfull which was really helpful. Apparently, if it shrinks it and it is under 50x50, you can solve it by making it an animated .gif, with just two identical frames.

Which is why those ones don't have the sexy shadow, unfortunately. But, I would rather they worked.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Emotikonz In reply to stuck-in-suburbia [2010-11-17 20:55:03 +0000 UTC]

Oh, right. Yeah... photoshop doesn't do that. If the frames are identical, it compiles them.
Unless.... it is MSN doing that...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

stuck-in-suburbia In reply to Emotikonz [2010-11-17 20:59:13 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm, I don't know if this would work, but what I would do is see if you can make two frames identical BUT split up one layer into two on the second frame. It might be enough of a difference that photoshop won't compress it.

Or, check to see if there are options somewhere, either in general or when you are exporting, where you can change that.
