Description
Czech Republic - SedlecTaken at the Cistercian Monastery in Sedlec. Due to plague epidemics in the 13th century, thousands and thousands of bones began to pile up. The monastery was eventually bought by the Schwarzenberg family and in 1870, a Czech woodcarver turned the bones into ghoulish attractions, one of which is this piece.

That is a true work of art. I'd like to have seen it work.

I'd love to have a masquerade there on hallows eve or halloween. Light it up. It'd be so ghastly but so fun. Dancing around under the flickering candlelight.

lol, now there's an interesting idea But I don't think that the church of which this is a part will let you do that... you know how churches are considering those kind of things

Mhmmm. Well, I wonder if I saved up loads and loads and loads if I could pay them enough to let them let me own it.

lol, that would be cool... "I own a church with skulls in it", sounds like something out of a B-type horror movie

How weird!
This awakes many different feelings. How can only somebody have the idea to make interior design out of real human bones?! Just because their were many?! Iยดd like to know what kind of person this designer was. Iยดve to look for further information!

Just out of interest, was it weird going into the Ossuary? Like, knowing that those are actual people. I've always wanted to go there, but it's quite expensive to get to the Czech from where I am Lucky you

Well, it's a *little* bit weird... from the outside, it's just a church like any other, but then you go down into this sparesly-lit "dungeon" where these huge piles of bones are lying around. That in itself is pretty awkward, but it gets even weirder when you see that someone has actually made decorations of other people's bones...
It was a mixed feeling of mostly amazement and a tiny bit of horror
Is it really that expensive from UK? You could go by car through the Canal tunnel and then drive all the way to the Czech republic; which wouldn't cost you anything except gas (which is, admittedly, rather expensive at the moment), especially if you take along a tent to spend the nights in

Oooh now there's an idea....I could sleep in my car and travel through the bits of Europe...hmm, now there's a new prospect! Gee, that'd be great, especially now it's getting closer to winter! My job ambition is to be a forensic photographer so the whole macabre thingy probably wouldn't bother me as much!

sturm In reply to SableIllusions [2008-11-09 16:02:12 +0000 UTC]
Hehe, if you're gonna sleep in your car, perhaps it'd be better to wait until it's spring or summer again... otherwise, you're gonna wake up as a popsicle one day
Nevertheless, you really should come over to the mainland one day
Are you going to an art college or something, to become a forensic photographer?

Nah, right now I'm trying to sift through my life and decide what to do and where to go. I found out I wouldn't be able to do Forensic Photography until next September, so I have to stay at uni for now whether I like it or not!

As far as the "where to go" part, I can recommend The Netherlands
Too bad that you have to wait for almost a year to switch to Forensic Photography, is your current study so radically different that you can't switch during the year? Or is it because of regulations and rules?

SableIllusions In reply to sturm [2008-11-14 11:01:12 +0000 UTC]
It's just rules and regs unfortunately But, things are starting to look up with my current course, so I'm going to give it more of a chance.
Half of my family come from the Netherlands From Arhnem, if I remember rightly. Don't know if that's spelt right though

Hmm, bummer... it's not cool when rules and regs are preventing people to do what they trugly want... What are you studying right now, then? (if you don't mind me asking )
Cool, so you have dutch roots, one more reason to come over one day And you almost got it right, it's Arnhem... nice city by the way; I was once planning to move there, but life had other plans for me.

I'm doing Illustration for Graphic Novels. Before, we weren't really doing anything to do with our course, but now it's getting interesting because we're doing proper briefs
I miss Holland quite a lot, I used to go over when I was younger. I miss the pancakes

Well, since I'm not able to hop between different worlds, I can assure you that this piece is from this world The idea of using dead people's bones is kinda strange, although I wouldn't immediately say that it is a lack of respect for the dead...
On the other hand, in most european cultures, the dead are usually left both in peace and in one piece... but knowing that the creator of this place is already dead as well, I guess we'll never know what his motivation was...

The creator was a monk.
The church is a roman catholic-one.
'Memento Mori' was the message.

Then you'd definately be in for a surprise... most of the stuff there is protected by touch-sensitive sensors so that an alarm goes off as soon as you touch something... trust me, we tried

wow a somewhat macabre picture.....
I would have liked to see it a little more focused, but who am I to judge this photograph

sturm In reply to gwynaeth [2004-10-24 11:53:12 +0000 UTC]
Hehehe, thanks
A little more focus would've been nice, yes, but I also wanted the complete chandelier to be in the picture
By the way, the black shadow on the right is caused by another light source, causing that part of the chandelier to somehow become under-exposed
Anyway, thanks for dropping by and commenting

yeah I was also looking at that under exposed part of the chandelier, but it didn't bother me. in fact I think it's rather interesting.
and your welcome ^^
