Description
This is a oil painting that I made in the middle of 2012. I normally find it more convenient to color stuff on the computer, but sometimes it's fun to go all traditional as wellThe goal was to create something renaissance looking, and as I think the violin is a beautiful instrument I came up with this.

You sure succeeded! Your use of light and shadow, especially in her shirt, the subdued colors, and the concentration on the girls face would make Carraveggio proud! It sould make you proud too, excellent work!

I thought this was a photograph on first glance. Very nice work!
Did you use a reference?

Thank you! I used several references (like 10 different photos of hands, hair, faces and violins) which I put together in photoshop for a final reference picture.

Face: beautiful, violin: fantastic, girl's hands: very good. However it seems to fall apart at the bottom. Her dress looks like it's too far down her body, like it's starting to fall off, the light and shading down there seems a bit off as well, it gives the impression that she doesn't have any figure. Perhaps it's just the placement of her hands and hair that gives this effect, not sure, or maybe she's very young? Did you use a photo reference? If so it's good to keep in mind that, as an artist, you have a licence to improve odd effects in photos!
Anyway just food for thought, overall very good!

Thanks for the nice critique!
The dress is placed to low, I agree, and the reason she lacks figure is that she is supposed to be a late preteen. I used several different photos for reference (like 10 or so if I recall correctly, put together in photoshop for a final reference).

What caught my attention about this piece in the line up of thumbnails was what wonderful perspective you utilized here. The reflections of the violin and the white tints in her face mirror each other well. Only criticism is that it appears some parts of the arms are little thin (right shoulder, bicep; left forearm), but overall, I think this is a very successful piece!

Thanks for the constructive criticism. It's fun (but a bit irritating as well) how you can go more or less blind after working on a picture for a while, missing the flaws. I see now, as you bring my attention to it, that parts of the arms indeed are a bit to thin. I need to pay more attention to the sketch before I start painting

This is beautiful! I love how it's got that old-timey rennaisance/rembrandt lighting, but has a modern look to it. The reflections on the face and the violin are gorgeous.

I think you got the position of the hand correctly. Its a beautiful picture but i just find the dress is a little too low.

Thanks for the advice. Now that you mention it, I have to agree that the dress should probably be positioned a bit higher. It's hard sometimes to preserve anatomy and proportions when clothes and props are added to the mix. It's something I have to practice

Very Rembrandt-like. I like darker, more subdued pictures anyway. I may be biased.

I love Rembrandt's style. He's one of my favourite artists, and a long term goal of mine is to be able to achieve the same subtle earth tones as him. A great problem I've had and still have to some extent, is that I tend to go "pink for the skin", "blue for the sky" and so on, when you'll find that many beautiful pieces of art use more limited color scales with lower saturation.
