Looks like a Western Box Tortoise. I've got two here at home. Every year or so half of all remaining ones get run over by cars. I wonder how long before they are officially "endangered"?
Also they can be extremely fierce. We had one for maybe twelve years, and it took a big chunk out of the dog's nose. Lucky wasn't so lucky that day.

It's an eastern box turtle Yeah, unfortunately they have been declining in the wild...people either find them and keep them or run them over...
But hopefully they will be able to make a comeback someday!

I read somewhere that every year half the Western Box Turtles get run over. Easy enough to believe, all the ones I've seen were in the road, or my brothers' driveway.

Yeah...usually it's females looking for a nesting site who are wandering around and end up getting hit, poor things!

I've been giving some thought to letting the two that I have free. I just need to find a place far enough away from motor traffic. I may end up doing a lot of homework on this.
Any ideas?

So yours are wild then? You don't want to be releasing them somewhere where they're not native of course. How long have you had them for?
Doing homework is definitely a good thing, and if you choose to release generally it's supposed to be close to where you found it, but if this is going to be very dangerous for them...I personally wouldn't think it's a good idea, but if there is somewhere farther where they will be safe...I help run a turtle website if you want to check it out (I'm Maria), I deal mainly with aquatic turtles but there are others on the forum who can give you some better advice! [link] I live in Canada and most of the time it's too cold to keep land turtles, as they should really be kept in outdoor enclosures.

it has to be some type of box turtle
i dont even know what they can do to stop it
dang!! mine bit my cousin a long long time ago.. she was feedin him cheetos..
he thought her finger was one and BAM
mine was named ralph (he had the red spots)
my grammas dog found him when he was half dollar size
i let him go after 6 years or so
now the turtle population has increased like 10 fold where i did that at
[link] i like to think this is him
and i know they live for a while.. so its possible

I did some homework on them a few years back, and got conflicting info. Optimistically they'll live 140 years. Less so, about 100 years. That's still better than most people.
They just need to stay away from cars. ..Also they make amazingly short work of crawdads. Imagine a lobster for dinner almost as big as yourself.

Indeed they do. With gusto I might add. The first thing they do is remove the claws with their beak; then they just go to town. crunch.

This reminds me of that movie were that guy is disguised as a turtle...I can't think of the name of it though.
That's gotta be a snappin' turtle, right?

It's a male eastern box turtle. They are the ones who usually have the bright colours and red eyes, though females can sometimes have red eyes too, this guy is definitely male!

That one is a red-eared slider, they are the most common species kept as pets and are often released into the wild. Just some info for ya, I help run a turtle website and thought I'd chip in
