Description
This is for a project I'm working on with , about George and Jane Boleyn. It's called Falling from Grace, and expect to see it online sometime in 2010!Here's a dramatic scene between George, Jane, and Thomas Cromwell. Cromwell has just told Jane something awful about George, the wheels are turning in her head, and George knows something disastrous has just occurred.
More to come!

Wonderful, beautiful attention to detail! Though Jane's pose seems awkward to me. Like she's balancing on one foot. I guess her movements would be stiff because of her bodice. . .

I see what you mean, but I think it would be OK if she were walking down a bit of a hill...
I really struggled with George's pose. I actually painted grass over his feet because I didn't want to paint them (plus Tudor shoes look goofy).

Heehee. I think George came out well. I agree on the shoes. I think, from the waist up 15th-17th century menswear are pretty sexy . . . the rest . . . not so much. I've tried drawing those poofy pants and shoes . . . so goofy.

I wanted to make George as smokin' hot as possible, given what a reputation he had with the ladies. And keep his costume authentic. Painting all those slashes was kind of excruciating though.
Speaking of shoes, I think cavalier boots are pretty cool. I'm partial to men's fashion of the 1630s-1640s (the breeches were not as poofy as earlier periods), but then it got pretty awful with the introduction of petticoat breeches in the late 1650s. Definitely a "what were they thinking" moment.

Yeah. I don't like those petticoat breeches. It's like a rhetorical "does this make me look fat?" question. Thunder thighs indeed. XD

Not to mention they were wearing pretty little skirts! I think only the movie Restoration has dared to show that particular fashion in all its hideous glory...

Yay! Another Tudor delicacy!
And that worm of Thomas Cromwell, bleargh.
Just a few days ago I was thinking of your style, and wondering if you would be interested in doing a tutorial about your painting technique. What do you think?
Moreover, I'm reading a splendid book about Richard III (ops...yes, always him ^^): "RIII, the Maligned King" by Annette Carson. It's very good, I'd suggest it to you, if you're interested!

That's a great idea! Let me think about that. I'm sorry I was slow in getting back to you... I just moved to NY, and you know what moving is like... ugh!
I wish I knew what I did with the painting. I did everything at the last minute, and I think it's in storage somewhere.

Aaaah Jane! So mysterious and maligned. I can't wait!

BEAUTIFUL details. As always, your palette is so rich. Great expressions too, especially Jane's; she looks quite authentically disturbed.

Thanks! I worked pretty hard on her expression, as you can tell. What do you think she's thinking about?

temiel In reply to suburbanbeatnik [2010-02-04 12:27:37 +0000 UTC]
Well... to me, she looks like whatever she's thinking about is tinged with anger and sadness (the little red rim under the eyes makes it look like she's THIS close to crying). Since I'm remiss in my duties as a history geek and don't know NEARLY enough about George/Jane, I can't really extrapolate specifically what she might be thinking about, but I can tell you that George looks genuinely dumbfounded.

just a question, do you hate Jane Boleyn?

suburbanbeatnik In reply to EmpressofHeaven [2009-12-15 20:54:26 +0000 UTC]
No I don't. There's very little evidence to support the vilification of her character that happened in the later 16th century. In fact, the persistent story that she accused her husband of incest is unsubstantiated by contemporary chroniclers, i.e. Chapuys.
Have you ever read the Jane Boleyn bio by Julia Fox? A lot is guesswork, but Fox takes what info there is and really examines it. A bit dry, but the appendix/annotations make up for it!

EmpressofHeaven In reply to suburbanbeatnik [2009-12-15 21:36:58 +0000 UTC]
hmm you got a point there, Chapuys invented all the crap about Queen Anne so i know he isnt a reliable source of information.
I have heard of Julia Fox! i really would like to see what she thinks about Jane. Joanna Denny (biographer for Queen Anne) referred to her when talking about Chapuys

We both posted Tudor at the same time!
Oh my, her bodice. I love it. And her face is so beautifully tragic. One tiny bit of CC is that I think George's left arm is a tad too long, although that may have to do with the effect caused by the GIANT SHOULDERS OF DOOM!
I can't remember if I've asked you before, but I have you read The Tudor Tailor?

suburbanbeatnik In reply to KingAndrewI [2009-12-14 23:09:09 +0000 UTC]
I noticed! That is so cool.
No, you're right about the arm. But by the time I realized it, I didn't feel like repainting it. The clothes do mask the difference, and the right arm is supposed to be bent... and my anatomy has always been a little goofy anyway.
The Tudor Tailor! Yes, I want that book so badly.
